• Person persecuted for their race, religion, nationality,

• Belongs to a particular social group, or

• Political opinion.

• Freedom taken away

• No respect

• Insecurity

• Lack of food (constant hunger)

• Hopelessness

RESETTLEMENT THROUGH THE UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES

• Apply for Refugee status

• Tell your life story to UNHCR

• After accepted, wait for a country opening

• Interview with country’s government (U.S.=INS)

• If accepted, must pass medical exam

• International Organization for Migration arranges travel

STEPS TO BECOME A U.S. CITIZEN

Steps for a Refugee Time frame

Residency status Upon arrival in United States

Green card application 1 year after arrival

Citizenship application 5 years after arrival

Interview and test Up to 1 year after application

Citizenship ceremony Up to 6 months after passing interview and test
