New Year resolutions Check List
Ask for help
Caring for someone can be really difficult physically and emotionally. So it’s really
important that you make the most of people around you who can help.
If family don’t live nearby or are unable (or even unwilling) to support you, perhaps
there are neighbours who can help out? You won’t know until you ask
Look after your health
It’s very easy to become so wrapped up in caring for your loved one that you start to
neglect your own health. However noble your intentions, this is a flawed strategy
because you need to be strong and well to be an effective carer. If your health
deteriorates, you won’t be able to look after the person you love in the way you want
Make more time for yourself
Booking in regular ‘me time’ is vital for ensuring that you stay happy and healthy and
therefore an effective carer for your loved one. Make sure you schedule it in.
Find like-minded friends
Loneliness is one of the most painful emotions carers experience, but sadly it’s very
common. Many carers find they see less and less of their old friends, either because
they don’t have the time to socialise as much as they used to, or because friends simply
don’t understand their new role. Join a support group.
Be honest with family and friends
Caring affects everyone in the family – not just you – so don’t be afraid to share the
load. Relatives and close friends often want to help, but don’t know how. A simple
phone call, explaining how you feel, might be all it takes to get them onboard, and
make you feel less alone.

A carer’s travel notes
Since becoming a carer I have found writing very relaxing. a good way to relieve stress when things go wrong. I recently shared my travel notes and personal thoughts in a book called “My Umrah Dia-ry” and published it on www.amazon.co.uk/books:
I explained in the book how I coped, ad-mittedly in my way, but I was trying to help others to adopt a similar strategy. The es-sence is, keep calm even when the worst happens. I tried to gear my thoughts to in-clude various personalities, their sexuality, religion and general preferences. I feel you will find action and humour on a day by

NHS HEALTH CHECK
The NHS Health Check is a health check-up for adults in England aged 40-74. It's designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps you find ways to lower this risk. We offer this service for FREE if you meet the NHS criteria, however not to worry if you don’t, we can offer you the same service for just £25. Carnival Pool and fitness centre, Wokingham are offering sessions on: Wednesday 18th December, 12:30-20:30; Wednesday 15th January, 12:30-20:30; or Wednesday 12th February, 12:30-20:30 For more information, or to book your session, please contact the site directly. Alternatively, you can email: healthchecks.wokinghampfp@nhs.net

Cold Weather
Messages
Cold weather messages for children and parents 1. Children with flu have the same symptoms as adults including fever, chills, aching muscles, headache, stuffy nose, dry cough and a sore throat lasting up to a week. Flu can be a very unpleasant illness for children with potentially serious complications, including bronchitis and pneumonia. The flu vaccine is routinely given on the NHS as an annual nasal spray to children. Please see NHS Choices for latest age criteria and other information. http://bit.ly/JegyAG 2. Put several layers of clothing on your child and make sure their head, neck and hands are covered. If they then get warm, they can take one layer off at a time. Dress babies and young children in one more layer than an adult would wear. 3. In drier winter air, children lose more water through their breath. Keep them drinking and try giving them warm drinks and soup for extra appeal. 4. Make sure your children are wearing footwear with a good grip to reduce the risk of slipping and falling on icy pavements and take your time when walking. 5. On dark mornings and evenings, it is recommended that children wear or carry something to make them more visible when making journeys. This should be something bright or fluorescent during the day and something reflective at dusk and in the dark. 6. Signs of frostbite are pale, grey or blistered skin on the fingers, ears, nose, and toes. If you think your child has frostbite, bring your child indoors and put the affected area in warm water. Signs of hypothermia are shivering, slurred speech, and unusual clumsiness. If you think your child has hypo-thermia, call 999 immediately. 7. Rooms in which infants sleep should be heated to between 16 to 20oC (61 to 68F).
Avoid a Fall this

Chicken, ham, leek & roast potato pie
Method
Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and brown the chicken for about 5 mins. Tip into a 22 x 28cm ovenproof pie dish, then evenly scatter over the ham and roast po-tatoes. Heat the remaining oil and soften the leeks for about 5 mins, then stir in the flour for 1 min.
Pour in the wine and stock. Bring to the boil and, stirring continuously, boil rap-idly to reduce to a thick sauce. Take off the heat, then stir in the crème fraîche and seasoning. Pour over the pie filling and leave to cool.
Unroll the pastry and cut off a small strip to make decorations (if you like). Roll the remainder to fit the dish and place on top of the pie. Use a fork to crimp the edges and press the pastry to the edge of the dish. Make a small hole in the centre, then cover well with cling film. Freeze for up to 3 months. For best results, de-frost at room temperature for 8 hrs.
Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Brush pie with egg to glaze (making sure the steam hole hasn’t sealed up). Cook for 30-40 mins, until golden and hot through.
Ingredients
2 tbsp olive oil 400g chicken breast, cut into
small chunks 140g thick-sliced ham,
roughly chopped roughly 450g leftover
roast potato, large ones halved
2 leeks, trimmed and sliced 1 heaped tbsp plain flour,
plus extra for dusting 200ml white wine 400ml chicken stock 3 heaped tbsp crème fraîche 375g shortcrust pastry sheet
(use fresh if you're freezing the pie)
beaten egg, to glaze
