REGULAR HOME MAINTENANCE
Keeping up with home maintenance tasks will keep you from future headaches and wasted money. It can be intimidating however, you can do the majority of it on your own without much experience. Creating a home maintenance calendar will help. If all these things get accomplished regularly, your home will be happy for years to come.
Monthly
• Inspect & change out HVAC filters,
• Clean range hood filters by simply using a
degreaser from an auto parts store
• Inspect your fire extinguisher (s) and ensure it’s easy
to access
Spring
Spring is a big month for home maintenance. They don’t
call it “Spring Cleaning” for nothing.
Especially focus on the exterior of your home as it’s just
gone through winter and is preparing for
summer heat, and sometimes, brutal humidity.
• Check the exterior drainage to ensure rain water flows
away from the house.
• Check and clean your gutters
• Inspect the exterior of your home and check the
foundation for any cracks. A good silicone/caulk can fix
a lot of your problems.
• Get your air conditioning system ready for
summer; consider having it serviced.
• Repair/replace damaged window screens. You don’t
want bugs making their way in
• Clear dead plants/shrubs from the house
• Inspect roofing for damage, leaks, etc. Repair as
needed; you may need a professional
GOOD FOOD BOX AND BREAKFAST FOOD BOX
The Good Food Box and Breakfast Food Box program are available at the Mental Health building currently located at 469 Kokomis Unit 3 (beside the bingo hall). Everyone is welcome to access the program free of charge.
The Good Food Box provides a meal for approximately 5 people and the Breakfast Food Box provides breakfast and snacks for children.
For any questions please call the Mental Health Team at 613-625-1551 or stop in.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE RELAPSE,
PREVENTION & AFTERCARE
‘The Underlying Factors of Relapse and Attaching No
Shame to the Person who is Recovery’ Important
information for us all to know when recovering from
substance use disorders and supporting a loved one
through their recovery journey.
People experience relapse for a million different reasons,
perhaps you simply fell back into your old patterns,
maybe you haven’t received proper treatment for
co-occurring disorders such as anxiety or depression, or
maybe you just weren’t ready. There is one underlying
factor that is nearly always present in a relapse: Shame.
Studies have demonstrated that looking optimistically
towards the future can help you maintain your sobriety,
while dwelling in shame of relapse can create continuous
relapse. Shame can prevent a person from maintaining
their hard-fought sobriety, and holding on to those
negative emotions inside is toxic.
Talking about your shame and what you’re experiencing
can help you overcome and establish new coping
strategies to assist you on your path of recovery. If there
is pain or shame attached to your relapse or recovery,
this may delay your recovery process. Talking about the
underlying issues can open your mind to a new narrative
which can focus on redemption and hope. Please be
gentle on yourselves and know that there is no shame in
working towards a healed recovery outcome. Relapse
happens, and remember that you are worthy of growth
and change. When you are supporting a loved one with
their relapse and recovery journey, please be gentle and
compassionate to your loved one & be the
inspiration for others. If you require any information or
support to help you to begin or continue to recovery from
a substance use disorder. Please contact you NNADAP
Addictions Worker Alex @ 613-625-1551
FENTANYL NNADAP ‘GET THE FACTS’!
Please take the time to read and learn about fentanyl, get the
facts so that you can understand why it can be so
dangerous, and even deadly. Fentanyl is a very potent
opioid pain reliever. It is generally used in hospital settings,
and can also be prescribed by a doctor to help control
severe pain. Forms of fentanyl for medical purposes can be
given as skin patches, injections and tablets. Within
Canada, fentanyl has entered the illegal drug market by theft
of pharmaceutical fentanyl products, illegal import from
other countries and by illegal laboratories. Canada’s illegal
drug supply is being contaminated with illegal
fentanyl. You can’t see, taste or smell fentanyl and a few
grains is enough to kill you. Fentanyl is causing high rates
of overdose and overdose death. Why is fentanyl so
dangerous? Fentanyl is 20 to 40 times more potent than
heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine, which
makes the risk of accidental overdose very high. A very
small amount of pure fentanyl is enough to kill the average
adult. Fentanyl can be mixed with other drugs such as
heroin and cocaine, as well found in counterfeit pills that
are made to look like prescription opioids.
Signs of a fentanyl or opioid overdose include; severe
sleepiness or loss of consciousness, slow, shallow
breathing, lips and nails turn blue, person is unresponsive,
gurgling sounds or snoring, cold and clammy skin and tiny
pupils.
What to do if you suspect an overdose? Call 911
immediately for emergency medical assistance; Canada’s
‘Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act’ can protect you and
anyone else at the scene of an overdose from simple drug
possession charges. Use Naloxone, a drug that can
temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Naloxone wears off in 20 – 90 minutes, so it is very
important to seek further medical attention. Re-administer
Naloxone if signs and symptoms do not disappear or
reappear. STAY with person until emergency services
arrive.
