“PIKWAKANAGAN ODAMINOWINAN”
Omàmiwininì Pimàdjwowin is striving to achieve a lasting
legacy of Algonquin Language through the
“Pikwakanagan Odaminowinan” Project. Our goal is to
create professional quality resources and access to the

learning initiative is to use games as a fun and practical
way of learning Algonquin language. Youth members of
Pikwakanagan are invited to participate in creating card
games based on Algonquin language and culture. These
games will be distributed to Pikwakanagan members.
The first workshop will take place at the Algonquin Way
Cultural Center on Oct 13 @ 11am. We will be choosing
the types of card games, illustrations and design as well
as learning how to play the games using Algonquin
language. There will be lunch and snacks provided.

THREE SISTER SOUP
In a three sisters garden, corn, beans and squash are planted together to help each other grow strong. The first sister (beans) takes nitrogen from the air and uses it to keep the other sisters healthy. The next sister (corn) grows tall stalks that the beans can climb, holding the plants together. And the last sister (squash) grows big leaves that cover the ground, keeping weeds from growing and making the ground moist. The spiny squash also keeps away any animals that would eat the sisters.
Serves 6
Ingredients
6 cups fat-free, low-sodium chicken or vegetable stock 16 oz. canned, low-sodium yellow corn or hominy (drained, rinsed to get rid of added sodium) 16 oz. canned, low-sodium kidney beans (drained, rinsed to get rid of added sodium) 1 small onion (chopped) 1 rib celery (chopped) 15 oz. canned, cooked pumpkin (Tip: Be careful, don’t get pumpkin pie filling! You can also use any other kind of squash and cook it up yourself!) 5 fresh sage leaves OR 1/2 tsp. dried sage 1/2 tsp. curry powder
Directions
Bring chicken stock to a slow boil. Add corn/hominy, beans, onion and celery. Boil for 10 minutes. Add sage leaves, curry and pumpkin and simmer on medium-low heat for 20 minutes.

*Taken from the American Heart Association: https://recipes.heart.org/en/recipes/three-sisters-soup
Not only is this soup good for a diabetic lifestyle, it’s good for everyone. Try not to add any salt, the sage leaves and curry will add more flavour to the soup than salt ever could. You can also use frozen or fresh corn, dried beans (of any kind – just cook them up first) and any other kind of squash (they have frozen chopped butternut squash at the grocery store.) Put your own spin on it and enjoy with your family.
For more diabetic friendly recipes, please contact the Diabetic Care Navigator at 613-625-2259 ext 233.

My name is Chrystal Wàban
Désilets and I am pleased to introduce myself
to you as the newly hired Operations Manager
of Omàmiwinini Pimàdjwowin, The Algonquin
Way Cultural Centre.
I come from a career in grassroots social service organizations that first began in 2002 and led to work with non-profit Indigenous organizations on issues related to homelessness, youth and women’s rights, criminal justice, maternal and family mental health, cultural educa-tion, Indigenous-led research, and information governance. You can learn more about me by visiting my website
www.chrystaldawne.com.
While working on a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a
Healing and Wellness Counsellor Diploma, my path began
to take on more ceremony and teachings.
Smudging, assisting Mentors and Elders, learning
protocols about healing and Lodge Keeper responsibilities
became part of the medicine I travel with in my bundle.
The sacredness of holding space for community awoke an
old skill within my being. I hope to empower traditional
spirituality that once made us unstoppable, to feel heard, to
feel united in support of each other.
I am a mother of teens and dogs, a Sister, an Aunty, a
Community Healer and Traditional Counsellor, a Root
Worker, Seed Keeper, Traditional Tattooist, and Storyteller.
I look forward to getting to know all the Pikwakanagan
families, near and far.
