SOLEMNITY
OF ALL SAINTS October 31-November 1, 2015: © Clare Colella Usually when we think of saints,
we think first of the canonized better-known saints, the one a friend calls “the big ones”, many of whom have their own day of celebration during the liturgical year. Most, if not all, of us have our own litany of saints – persons we know and love who have lived and loved to the best of their ability, who have gone before us into eternal life. Take a few moments – recall these whom we have loved, and honor them in a special way, along with all the Church, today. Known to many, or known to few, they are the beloved of God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines “saint” as the holy one who leads (or led) a life in union with God, through the grace of Christ and receives the reward of eternal life. The Church itself is called the “communion of saints” in the words of the Apostles’ Creed, our ancient statement of beliefs. Over the centuries, the Church has given some saints special titles such as “Doctor of the Church: (theologian, teacher or mystic), “Apostle” (the close followers of Jesus who were sent out to teach and preach, or those who were sent to convert specific peoples or countries), “Father” or “Mother” of the Church (men and women who held special roles of leadership and formation at their time in history). There is another category of saints called “Patron Saints” who are venerated because of their special connection to a place, a group of people, a time, or an aspect of life or spiritual journey. Popular collections of lives of the saints and of patron saints are available; often books of “Babies Names” will also give some references to the saints or persons best known for that name. Long-standing tradition for Catholic and Christian families is to name newborns after a special saint who will be a “patron saint”. Parents now seem more inclined to give variations of saints’ names, “fad” or quirky spellings, compound or created names, names of seasons or months, and names without any Christian or biblical roots. Christians often do not know their patron saints or the life stories of those for whom they are named, whether those are canonized saints or not. In some ways, the

“communion of saints” is less celebrated than in earlier times. Perhaps we are creating a new litany of saints for the decades ahead! This is a good time to re-examine what the Church offers us as the way of holiness, the path to sainthood, the Beat-itudes (the Gospel) the stories and example of those who have been faithful to God, who experienced struggles of faith or conversion in their lifetime. They are part of our larger family of faith, too! Tomorrow, November 2, we pray in a special way for all those who have died. They too are part of the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church.
