October 01, 2017 • Twenty-Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time - Respect Life Sunday 3

A Note From The Pastor… This Sunday is October 1st, and so we celebrate Respect Life

Sunday at all of the Mases. In observance of this important message,

there will be a Holy Hour this Sunday, October 1st, from 7PM to 8PM

in the Church. There will be Exposi"on of the Blessed Sacrament,

Recita"on of the Rosary, Prayer, concluding with Benedic"on. Please

come and pray for a Greater Respect for the Right to Life. Also, our

Respect Life Commi#ee is coordina"ng a Diaper Drive to benefit Aid

For Women, a Crisis Pregnancy Center serving mothers in Lake

County. We will be collec"ng diapers a*er all of the Masses on

October 14th and 15th in the Parish Center. All sizes are welcomed.

There will be a presenta"on, “God’s Revela!on: Why It’s Needed

& How We Know It,” by Msgr. Robert Dempsey, the Pastor of

St. Patrick Parish in Lake Forest. The presenta"on will address

ques"ons such as, “What do Catholics mean when they say God has

revealed Himself to us?” “How do we know what God has said?” and “Where do we find God’s

revela!on today?” Please note that the presenta!on will be at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic

Church, located at: 3535 Thornwood, in Glenview, their phone number is: (847) 729-1414 on

Sunday, October 22nd, from 12 Noon to 1:30PM. No registra"on is required. There will be a

free-will offering and refreshments.

Perhaps you’ve seen Fr. Mike walking around with his le* arm in a sling. He has a small fracture

in his le* forearm. Please keep him in your prayers. He has been experiencing pain, but remains in

good spirits. He says that he s"ll feels fortunate that he’s le*-handed!

This Wednesday, October 4th, is the Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi, and we will once again be

having our Blessing of Pets next Sunday. Deacon Jim Askew has graciously volunteered to do the Pet

Blessing next Sunday, October 8th, at 12:30PM in the OLH School Parking Lot in front of the School.

A few weeks ago, I announced a new volunteer ministry opportunity of Mass Sacristan.

Generally speaking, Mass Sacristans would ensure that everything is setup correctly before Mass;

make sure everything is put away a*erwards; communicate with ushers regarding the collec"on;

open or close the Church (on occasion). One volunteer has come forward, but we could use a few

more. Please pray and consider volunteering to serve the Lord by caring for the sacred vessels and

items used during Mass. You may contact me by E-mailing me at: frpaul@ourladyo!umility.org, or

by calling the Rectory.

There will be a Public Square Rosary Crusade on Saturday, October 14th, at 12 Noon at Shiloh

Park in Zion. The Rosary will be recited publicly in observance of the 100th Anniversary of the

Fa"ma Appari"ons in Portugal, when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd-children.

Please see this bulle"n for more details.

Let us pray for a Greater Respect for the Right to Life, and for all those affected by the recent

hurricanes and earthquakes. Also, please pray for a speedy recovery for Fr. Mike.

God Bless,

Fr. Paul

Ask A Priest

Q: I have heard a lot of talk recently about discovering my ‘gi!s of the Spirit.’ Does everyone have a gi!? How

do I go about discovering mine?

A: About 10 years ago, a new business opened shop in my parents’ neighborhood; The Kabbalah Center. I remember

laughing when I ini"ally saw it, but could only shake my head and sigh as I no"ced how much traffic was passing through

those doors. I reflected out loud, ‘So many people searching for answers, but so few that know where to look.’

Perhaps you have no"ced this as well; the Catholic Church has developed a reputa"on for being ‘boring’ or ‘uninspiring’.

People have developed the iden"ty of being ‘Spiritual, but not Religious.’ In their opinion, the Catholic Church has nothing

to offer. Eastern spirituality, in the opinion of so many folks, can teach the Church a thing or two about God!

This loss of awareness of her mys"cal Tradi"on is one of the most regre#able things that has happened to the Holy

Mother Church in recent years. The Truth of the ma#er is that, ever since her earliest days, the Church has consistently

enjoyed an outpouring of the gi*s of the Spirit! On Pentecost Sunday, the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles.

Those floodgates of grace have been open ever since, even when we have failed to pay them very much a#en"on.

Charism is the theological term used to describe the extraordinary power given to the Chris"an by the Holy Spirit for the

good of the Church. Let’s spend a few moments analyzing that sentence. Charisms are extraordinary – they go beyond

the everydayness of our lives. They involve power (in Greek: dynamis) – they dynamically allow us to affect the world

around us. Each of us has a Charism, or Charisms – no one can feign powerlessness. Charisms should not be confused

with voca!ons, although they may go hand in hand. You may have the Charism of heroic pa"ence that enables you to be

a good mother, but you have the voca"on of motherhood. Finally, these gi*s are not for us, but for the Church – they are

not for selfish use, or for profit, but to help others get to Heaven. For a good sample list of Charisms, let us turn to

1 Corinthians 12.

To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the

same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gi*s of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds;

to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varie"es of tongues; to another interpreta"on of

tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distribu"ng them individually to each person as he

wishes…

Some people God has designated in the Church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty

deeds; then, gi*s of healing, assistance, administra"on, and varie"es of tongues… Strive eagerly for the greatest

spiritual gi*s.

Now, when St. Paul talks about a Charism like healing, he is not talking about a doctor who prescribes medica"on. An

individual with this Charism is literally able to heal people with a touch or a prayer (in the same way Jesus and the Apostles

did). This might sound incredulous, but this is a legi"mate, authen"c gi* of the Spirit. Perhaps one of you has this

Charism, just wai"ng to be discovered!

Charisms take all shapes and sizes. St. Joseph of Cuper"no had the Charism of flying (and not in an airplane!).

St. Padre Pio could read the souls of his penitents. St. Vincent Ferrer had the power to raise people from the dead!

Despite the diversity in Charisms, one constant remains; these great saints all used the gi*s they were given to glorify God,

and convert souls for Christ.

So how do we go about discovering our par!cular Charisms? Well, as St. Paul men"ons in the above passage, some people

are given the gi* of discernment of spirits; it is their Charism to help other people discover their Charisms! From

October 6th-9th, St. Patrick Church in Wadsworth will be offering the Light of the World Retreat. This is a great forum for

prayer and reflec"on, and to interact with likeminded people. In the future, OLH hopes to host a Called and Gi!ed

Workshop, which specializes in discernment of Charisms. In addi"on, we have several people at the Parish, both clergy

and lay leaders, who are available for individual spiritual direc"on. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at the Parish

Office to set up an appointment.

Dear friends, each of us have our gi*s to share. May we be wise in our discernment of these Charisms, and fearless in

manifes"ng them to the world, that we might win many souls for Christ.

Peace,

Fr. Mike

ROSARY CRUSADE In this historic year of the Fa"ma Centennial (1917-2017),

the world is at a historic crossroad. God is more offended

blessings, and to avert His wrath. He will hear us, if we

pray through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. That’s

why we’re doing the 2017 Public Square Rosary Crusade.

In “The Secret of the Rosary,” Saint Louis de Mon?ort said:

“Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer to

appease the anger of God, and call down His mercy, and

Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has always

advocated public prayer in !mes of public tragedy and

suffering.”
