MEXICO’S APPROACH
• Mexico has a National System of Statistical and Geographical
Information (SNIEG - NSS).
• SNIEG´s integration:

STC ON OPEN DATA (CTEDA)
• The CTEDA was created in December
2013
• Objectives:
– Promote availability and use of open
data
– Develop and review guidelines,
technical standards and best
practices

• In November 2014 the Technical
Standard for Access and
Publishing of Open Data of
Statistical and Geographical
Information of National Interest
(TS) was approved.
• It establishes provisions to make
information available as Open
Data.
RESULTS OF THE CTEDA

• The TS establishes that government departments in Mexico must
provide access to their information as Open Data.

balancing openness (data
disaggregation) and privacy

• Up to this day, INEGI has published 1,921 data resources as Open Data.
• As a result, INEGI was ranked 1st out of 125 countries in the ODIN 2015, and 16th
out of 173 countries in the 2016 edition.

• The CTEDA will review the
Technical Standard in order to
include the SDGs indicators.
• In 2017 all the statistical and
geographical information of
National Interest will be available as
Open Data.
• INEGI will start developing a Linked
Open Data prototype.
