ONLINE CLASSES OVERVIEW

EQUIPMENT

Recommended for participating in online classes

• PC or MAC desktop or laptop computer –

with webcam and microphone, or a Mobile device (tablet or phone)

• Earphones/headset – useful for eliminating or minimizing feedback issues. (highly recommended)

WEBEX GET THE APP

Cisco WEBEX MEETINGS application (download app)

Download the app and follow the installation instructions for your device.

If you do not know how to install an app on your device,

ask your favorite tech support person.

• You do NOT need a Webex Account. (this is for UC Staff)

• You will be joining as a GUEST or attendee.

When you open the app for the first time, you

simply need to type in your name and email. Click use as guest.

WEBEX JOIN ACCESS

A few days before your class, you will receive two email documents:

A Confirmation letter and a Join Meeting invite for each registered class.

Either of these documents can be used to initiate access the meeting.

• CONFIRMATION LETTER

Access your class by clicking the link to join the meeting.

• Join Meeting Invite has big green Join Meeting button.

Click the green JOIN MEETING button.

After you have clicked the link from the confirmation letter or the

join meeting email, a browser will open.

Quickly click the Join from your browser link.

This will open the meeting in a browser.

This is ideal for large classes.

WEBEX IN A BROWSER (large classes the easy way)

Note: joining a meeting by browser will not allow access to ‘grid

view’, which shows multiple participants on a single screen view.

A preview window will appear.

For large classes, please make

sure you microphone and video

camera are OFF (red icon).

Click JOIN MEETING.

A meeting window will open.

Preview window: click Join meeting.

After you have clicked the link from the confirmation

letter or the join meeting email, a browser open,

if you wait a moment, the app should open

automatically, if it doesn’t, look for the

Open with Cisco Webex App link and click.

WEBEX IN THE APP (best for smaller classes)

Note: joining a meeting in the APP is required for access to ‘grid

view’, which shows multiple participants on a single screen view.

If you have successfully opened the App, a Preview window will appear.

Click JOIN MEETING to open meeting window.

• Be mindful of audio in particular.

MUTE when not speaking, to avoid unnecessary noise.

• Turn OFF any extra audio sources: radio, tv, dog, spouse.

• If there are experiencing disruptive technical difficulties you may contact OLLI to

help resolve technical difficulties. Tech help line 513-549-7712.

Online Class Etiquette

CLASS DAY

Students without computer access who have entered via the call-in number:

• They will hear and speak to the class through their phone only.

Some students may have an older computer without a webcam or microphone.

• Need to connect via phone to hear and speak to class.

• Student can also download the app and join meeting to SEE the class.

• If their computer has speakers, they must be turned DOWN or OFF to avoid

audio feedback issues.

Webex controls look a little different on a mobile device.

Tap the screen, icons, photos and rotate the device to locate features.

MOBILE DEVICE

From a smartphone:

Download and open

the Cisco Webex

Meetings App.

Click

JOIN MEETING

Enter your Name and

Email address and

click NEXT.

You will receive an email invitation to class.

Click yes, maybe or no for your RSVP

If you sync your email to your calendar,

otherwise take no action.

On the meeting day, click the

green JOIN MEETING button.

You may need to scroll down to see this.

This will open the

Cisco Webex Meetings App.

Click to allow the app to access your camera

and microphone.

find more options,

Common Problems

• Low bandwidth (DSL vs Cable vs Fioptics)

• Computer too far from Router

• Too many wifi devices connected to one router

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

Common Solutions

• Low bandwidth (DSL vs Cable vs Fioptics). Fioptics is preferable, followed by Cable

• Low bandwidth Turn OFF video and audio when not speaking.

• Computer too far from Router. Move computer closer or plug directly into router.

• Too many wifi devices connected to one router. Turn off all roku, firestick or TV, turn

wifi off on cellphone, tablets or other computers that are connected to wifi during

class time.
