We are in the midst of celebrating Forty Days for LIFE, and this is a
good opportunity to reflect on what Pope Francis has written on life
issues, as he can often be misinterpreted or misquoted in the media.
In his beautiful Apostolic Exhortation ‘The Joy of the Gospel’ he
writes: “Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care
with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most
defenseless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to
deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one
pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from
standing in the way of this. Frequently, as a way of ridiculing the
Church’s effort to defend their lives, attempts are made to present
her position as ideological, obscurantist and conservative. Yet this
defense of unborn life is closely linked to the defense of each and
every other human right. It involves the conviction that a human
being is always sacred and inviolable, in every situation and at every
stage of development. Human beings are ends in themselves and
never a means of resolving other problems. Once this conviction
disappears, so do solid and lasting foundations for the defense of
human rights, which would always be subject to the passing whims
of the powers that be. Reason alone is sufficient to recognize the
inviolable value of each single human life, but we also look at the
issue from the standpoint of faith, every violation of the personal
dignity of the human being cries out in vengeance to God and is an
offense against the creator of the individual.” (No. 213).

In his Apostolic Exhortation, ‘Rejoice and Be Glad’, he writes: “A
harmful theological error is found in those who find suspect the
social engagement of others, seeing it as superficial, worldly,
secular, materialist, communist or populist. Or they relativize it, as if
there are other more important matters, or the only thing that counts
is one particular ethical issue or cause that they themselves defend.
Our defense of the innocent unborn, for example, needs to be clear,
firm and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of a human life, which
is always sacred and demands love for each person, regardless of
his or her stage of development. Equally sacred, however, are the
lives of the poor, those already born, the destitute, the abandoned
and the underprivileged, the vulnerable infirm and the elderly
exposed to covert euthanasia, the victims of human trafficking, new
forms of slavery, and every form of rejection. We cannot uphold an
ideal of holiness that would ignore injustice in a world where some
revel, spend with abandon and live only for the latest consumer
goods, even as others look on from afar, living their entire lives in
abject poverty.” (No 101). On May 11
th
, 2018 Pope Francis
enshrined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (No. 2267):
“The Church teaches in the light of the Gospel, that the death
penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and
dignity of the human person, and she works with determination for its
abolition worldwide.”

Dress the Part
Can you imagine being invited to a reception at Bucking-
ham Palace? Furthermore, can you imagine showing up
in any old outfit you just happened to pull from your
closet? Almost certainly you would accept the invitation
promptly, and then make preparations to be dressed in
your finest. Jesus’ story in today’s Gospel has some
surprising twists and turns. It concerns a king hosting a
wedding feast for his son. Even the weddings of ordinary
people at the time were days filled with ritual and
feasting, so a king’s summons to such an event was a
singular mark of favor. Even so, some of the invited
guests decide they have better things to do and refuse.
Some are so angry at being interrupted that they attack
the messengers. The king is furious and deals harshly
with those who have murdered his servants. Now the
king offers his invitation to the crowds in the streets:
anyone who wants to can come to this feast. The
banquet hall, we are told, fills up with a motley crew of
guests. Among the crowd, however, the king spots one
man who is not dressed for the occasion and who cannot
explain why. This guest is thrown out into the dark night.
Yet how could the man have been properly dressed?
Wasn’t he just pulled in off the street? Yes, but the king
would have had a wedding garment waiting for each
guest at the entrance. This man did not bother to pick
one up. In Jesus’ time, this was an insult of the worst kind
to the host. We are all invited to the table of the Lord. Our
outer wedding garment is to dress with care and respect.
Our inner garment is to put on Christ, clothing ourselves
in his love and goodness in order to be worthy of the
Kingdom.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We celebrate World Mission Sunday (WMS) on October 18th this year. This annual, worldwide
Eucharistic celebration emphasizes our shared baptismal call to mission.
In his message for World Mission Sunday (WMS), Pope Francis implores us “In this year
marked by the suffering and challenges created by the COVID19 pandemic, the missionary journey
of the whole Church continues in light of the words found in the account of the calling of the prophet
Isaiah: “Here I am, send me” (6:8). This is the evernew response to the Lord’s question: ‘Whom
shall I send?’ This invitation from God’s merciful heart challenges both the Church and humanity,
in the current world crisis.”
The Holy Father reminds us that, as baptized Christians, we are called personally to mission
especially at this time to bring Christ’s love to those most forgotten around the world. Jesus is God
the Father’s own Missionary. He asks us to respond to this call to mission, this invitation to “step out
of ourselves for love of God and neighbor.” What will your answer be? “Here I Am, Send Me” is the
response we will all endeavor to live out through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and
generosity to the WMS collection.
This year’s COVID crisis created setbacks for our nation, but it presented far greater hardships for
our brothers and sisters in poor mission countries. This year, in response to the challenges to the
Mission Church from the pandemic, I invite all of us in this diocese to respond in the most generous
way possible. As you do, I offer my sincere personal gratitude for your kind missionary heart,
reaching out in love on World Mission Sunday.
Gratefully in the Lord,
