NPL/IPEM Reference Dosimetry Audits

Russell Thomas

Radiotherapy Standards Users’ Meeting5th June 2007

Background

NPL, at the invitation of IPEM, started conducting reference dosimetry audits in 1995 since then we have conducted:

• 40 MV photon audits• 6 electron audits (1996 code)• 8 electron audits (2003 code)• 6 kV photon audits (first one in 2003)

Audit Format

Basic structure for all reference dosimetry audits:

• Beam quality• Machine output• Field instrument calibration

+ specific areas such as ion recombination+ individual areas of concern

Helical Tomotherapy

• Clinicians like the dose distributions that tomotherapy can give …

Helical Tomotherapy is …

• … just an “optimised” integrated system to deliver IMRT

• alanine/EPR could be as useful in “ordinary” IMRT

length: 40 cm

width: 5 cm, 2.5 cm or 1 cm

Current and Future work

• NPL offers alanine measurements in the NPL-tomo phantom as a routine service to any TomoTherapy user, with– on-site measurements by NPL for UK users– Postal service (phantom and dosimeters) for non-UK users

• NPL would like to apply alanine dosimetry to IMRT delivered by conventional linacs– Volunteers, please, to identify and help investigate issues– Will co-ordinate work with the RTSIG working group on IMRT

Where now for NPL Audits?

• DTI funding from October 2007?• Hospitals buying additional audits • Continue with kV, MV and Electron audits• HDR Brachytherapy• Smallfield and IMRT• Improve tie in with individual audit region• National electron audit of all radiotherapy departments• Measuring impact
