Januaryis“officially”knownasthecoldestmonthoftheyearintheNorthernHemisphere,whichbytheway(andnotsurprisinglyso)includesour“grand”CityofCincinnati,Ohio.Afewofuscansurelystillrememberthecold-estdayonrecordhere,asJanuary18th,1977(duringtheBlizzardof1977).I,myselfwasinmySeniorYearofHighSchool,andboydidmyfriendsandImissalotofschoolthatWinter(butwewerestillabletomakeupenoughofthoselostsnowdaysandgraduateontime,inJune). JanuarydidnotactuallyexistasaMonthuntilapproximately700B.C.whenit(andFebru-ary),wereaddedtotheRoman(preJulian)Cal-endarbythe2ndKingofRome,NumaPontilius.January1st(unofficially)replacedMarch1stasthefirstdayoftheNewYearbutwasnotactu-allycelebratedassuchuntiltheYear153B.C.The“official”January1stasNewYearsDaywasdeclaredbynoneotherthantheGreatRomanSoldierandPoliticalLeader,JuliusCaesarintheYear46B.C. JuliusCaesarimplementedtheJulian(Solar-

based)CalendartoreplacethepreviousRoman(Lunar-based)Calendarwhichhadgrownveryinaccurateovertime. DuringtheMiddleAges,theCelebrationofJanuary1stasNewYearsDaywas“temporar-ily”abolisheduntiltheimplementationoftheGregorianCalendarintheYear1582A.D.Atthattime,onlyCatholicCountriesadoptedtheGregorianCalendar,therebyrestoringJanuary1stasNewYearsDay.Foranother170yearsProtestantCountries,suchasEnglandandallpartsoftheBritishEmpire(includingtheAmeri-canColonies)continuedtoobserveNewYearsDayonMarch1stofeveryyear,untiltheYear1752A.D.whentheyformallyadoptedtheGre-gorianCalendarwithJanuary1stasNewYearsDay.

Holiday trash amnesty extended to Jan. 17, 2014ExtremeColdMayLeadToServiceDelays Lastweek’sbittercoldweatheriscausingsomedelaysinwastecollectionaroundthecityofCincinnati.Currently,Sanitationcrewsarerunningaboutadaytoaday-and-a-halfbehindschedule.Residentsshouldstillsetouttheirtrash(andrecy-cling)cartsontheirnormalscheduledcollectionday.However,residentsareaskedtobepatientandleavetheircartsatthecurbuntilthetrashand

recyclingarecollected.Ifnecessary,SanitationcrewswillcontinueworkonSaturdaytocatchupwiththisweek’scollection. TheCityofCincinnatiisalsoextendingitsWinterHolidayTrashAmnestythroughFriday,Jan.17,2014.ResidentsmaysetoutextratrashinsealedplastictrashbagsnexttotheirCity-providedtrashcart.Plasticbagsshouldnotbeoverstuffed. Amnestyweeksarecenteredaroundholidayswhenhouseholdstypicallygeneratemoretrashthannormal.Residentsmuststillcall591-6000toscheduleaspecialpickupforbulkyitems.

Winter weather: CFD asks residents to help TheCincinnatiFireDepartment(CFD)wouldliketoremindresidentstostaysafeduringseverelycoldweather. Inaddition,sincethesevereweatherimpactsresponsetimesasfirefighterscompetewithadverseweatherandroadconditions,theCincinnatiFireDe-partmentwillbefullystaffedduringthenextfewdays.
