A New Bio-Based Deposition Polymer: A Comparative Performance Assessment Versus
Traditional Cationic Polymers
For several decades, formulators have used a variety of cationic polymers to condition and promote deposition of silicone or other benefit agents in rinse-off products. A novel naturally-based deposition polymer – Starch Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride (SHC) – (patent pending) will be introduced. Cleansing formulations based on SHC provide excellent clarity and a high degree of bio-based content. In these applications, SHC imparts excellent conditioning benefits on hair and skin.
This presentation will describe quantitative and qualitative evaluations of prototype shampoo, body wash and lotion formulations containing SHC or traditional polymers such as Polyquaternium-10 and Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride. Combing tests conducted at a third party laboratory clearly shows that SHC reduces wet combing force by approximately 50% as compared to Polyquaternium-10. It shows the highest silicone deposition efficiency from a simple SLES/Betaine system. In skin care applications, SHC-based body wash leaves the least amount of residue on skin after rinsing and imparts a powdery with a low waxy and silicone-like after feel.
Speaker:Ashraf Hossain is one of those people ‘getting things done’ and driving results – through collaboration, partnerships and relationships – as a Senior Manager in the consumer products industry. His enthusiasm and ‘can do’ attitude radiate a sincere passion for delivering value and benefits to his customers.
Ashraf has more than 15 years of experience in personal care products, and he is currently working at Ingredion as a Business Scientist.

Welcome back! I hope that everyone enjoyed the summer and had a chance to relax and recharge for our upcoming fall events. The MWSCC board members have been hard at work over the summer months planning and preparing. You will begin to notice the changes that we have been implementing for the chapter.
We have incorporated and our name is “Society of Cosmetic Chemists, Midwest Chapter, Inc.”. Please use this exact wording on all correspondence going forward (no abbreviations or truncations, please). Our webperson, Paul, has given a facelift to our website. Please surf the pages as we have made changes to facilitate content management. The pages are still under construction even though the site is active as we work towards a final product. The SCCoop is undergoing changes as we create a new image to go with our new name. Thank you Nick Giebel our newsletter editor! Blast mail is being sent by Constant Contacts now. Please, check your junk/spam box for the September e-blasts. If you don’t find any e-blasts, please join the mailing list on the website (and unsubscribe any old email addresses especially if you changed jobs).
Our Educational Dinner Meetings continue on September 13th at 5:00 p.m. at Capri Banquets in Countryside, IL when Ashraf Hossain will present “A New Bio-based Deposition Polymer”.
The Midwest Tutorial “Basic Hair Science” is coming up on October 11th, 2016. The course is free to Midwest Chapter members, but we have limited space so register soon. Additional details for registration are in this issue and on our website.
We are accepting Scholarship applications until October 15th, 2016. The guidelines and application are published on our website. Please encourage undergraduate and graduate students in a scientific field related to the cosmetic industry to apply.
Thank you to everyone for another exceptional Teamworks event this year! Our Teamworks committees did an amazing job planning and executing the events. From Social Night to the Technical Symposium to the Teamworks Supplier Exhibition including the new HI&I Mini Tech Talks, all four events combined to create a fun, social and educational two day event.
A Night of Caribbean fun was enjoyed by all Social Night attendees at the Hilton Rosemont Grand Ballroom. It was a lively evening with the music of Mr Myer’s Band and a taste of the Caribbean. Thank you to Lisa, Toni, Elaine, Cindy, Crystal, Wilma, Kristen and Karen for volunteering your time so that we might enjoy ourselves and network. Thank you to our Social

“Basic Hair Science”By: Roger L. McMullen, Ph.D.
Starting with a brief review of hair biology, this course is a detailed look at the science of hair. The first part of the program takes a deep dive into what makes hair, hair and measuring hair properties. Which leads us to hair treatments, environmental exposure and mechanisms of processing the hair as well as how these affect hair structure. The program is designed for cosmetic chemists, product developers, marketers, raw material suppliers, trainers and others should find the material highly applicable and appropriate to their interests.
Listed below are the topics covered in the tutorial
• Hair biology• Hair morphology and fine structure• Technologies to measure physical and chemical phenomena in hair• Optical properties of hair• Hair volume and its relation to hair body• Hair conditioning• Hair fixative and styling• Changes in hair structure caused by chemical treatments• Color chemistry and dyeing of hair• Hair Photo-damage• Investigation of Physicochemical Changes in Hair as a Result of Treatment with Formaldehyde and Thermal Styling Devices

I am very pleased to send you this Third Announcement, Call for Registration, for the 29th IFSCC Congress to be held this October at the Walt Disney World® Dolphin Resort in Orlando, USA. Inside this announcement you will find information on the podium and poster presentations, exhibition, social events, sponsors, travel, hotel information and registration details. The Committee on Scientific Affairs (COSA) has selected 74 podium presentations and 350 poster presentations from 450 submissions. In addition there will be 8 special keynote speakers. You can be sure that the level of scientific discovery and learning will be outstanding! The suppliers’ exhibition on Monday and Tuesday represents most of the major players in our industry. Take advantage of the new Innotech/Connect Zone within the exhibition where a number of universities will discuss the latest emerging technologies. Note, for our supply base there is still time to join the exhibition.
We have three major social events planned for the Congress, all with the Disney magic touch. On Sunday morning, 10/30, there will be a golf outing at Celebration. At the same time there will be a fun run around the Dolphin/Disney properties. And look for something special for the accompanying children. The official venue for this Congress is the Dolphin Resort. This is the center of most Congress activities. An excellent room rate has been negotiated at the Dolphin for all of our registrants. The Organizing Committee, COSA, Exhibition Committee, Sponsorship Committee, Golf Committee, Teamwork Exhibition Company, the Dolphin Resort and Walt Disney World® personnel have all worked extremely hard to ensure that this Congress will offer you the very best in science, exhibition, logistics, and social atmosphere. It is here at the Congress, that you will INNOVATE new ideas that will INSPIRE you to IMAGINE all the opportunities available to us within the cosmetic and personal care industry.
I am very proud and grateful to both our corporate and individual sponsors who have greatly contributed to this event. Without their support, this Congress would not have been possible. If you have any interest in becoming a Congress sponsor, please visit our web site at www.ifscc2016.com.
I look forward to seeing you in Orlando for the start of the Congress at the Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception! This 3 ½ day global industry event is not to be missed!
