The Kwakiutl

They lived in the Northwest Coast near

the Pacific Ocean. This environment has mild

temperatures and heavy

rainfall. There are large, dense forests and many

rivers.

There are salt water and

freshwater fish, forest and

ocean animals.

Plant life includes ferns,

berries, and skunk

cabbages. They specialized in

salmon and other types of

fishing.

Most men did not wear any

clothing at all, but some wore

a breechcloth.

Women wore short skirts

made of cedar bark. In colder

weather, both wore long tunics

and cloaks made of

shredded cedar bark with

moccasins.

They lived in rectangular,

cedar-plank houses with

bark roofs.

Their houses were large

enough to hold up to 50 people.
