How the music used to be recorded is one of the subject on music lessons. Have a look at two barrel organs.● This one is hand-sculptured.

The pieces of music (or tunes) are encoded onto the barrel using metal pins and staples. Pins are used for short notes, and staples of varying lengths for longer notes.

● Very precise job.

Barrel organs come in different sizes, they`re often beautifully hand-made decorated.● This one is the size of a big wardrobe.

Barrel organs can play different format of music, such as cardboard books or paper rolls.● You can see some at the bottom of the photo.

You don`t have to be a musician to operate it !● But it helps ...

Now an exercise. If all students and teachers of Drents College sing for 10 minutes, how many doughnuts can they eat to balance their energy level (1 doughnut =300 kcal)? What if they climb the stairs ?
