Tobacco Use On College Campuses: Negative There Is No

Positive

▪ Research has shown that smoking and tobacco use is a problem

among college students.

▪ Adults ages 18-29 are among the biggest users of cigarettes, which

closely mirrors the age demographic of college students.

▪ Campuses that are 100% smoke-free can reduce student tobacco use

twice as much as campuses that merely restrict smoking and tobacco

use to certain areas.

▪ College students often begin smoking at parties or social

events……these intermittent smoking habits often lead to long-term

tobacco dependency and subsequent adverse health issues.

The Benefits of Establishing Tobacco-Free Campus

Policies

▪ Tobacco free campus policies help reduce tobacco use among

college students. Moreover, parents of college students are

overwhelmingly in favor of said policies.

▪ Tobacco-free campus policies that prohibit smoking indoors

have the greatest support.

▪ 53% of parents and 57% of college students consider whether

a campus is tobacco-free to be an important factor in college

choice.

The Benefits of Establishing Tobacco-Free Campus Policies

(Cont’d)

▪ 45% of college students surveyed believe tobacco-free campus

policies help reduce tobacco use among their counterparts.

▪ Creating smoke and tobacco free campuses/environments for

students is much more than an initiative to appease non-smokers

who can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke. It’s about preserving

the health of young adults who make up the largest demographic of

students.

Tobacco Free Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) Campuses

In an effort to get ahead of the game and by partnering with the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Arkansas, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff established a campus wide tobacco-free policy in July of 2007. The policy was effective on January 1, 2008.

The University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) followed suit in July of 2008.

NOTE: Most colleges and universities in Arkansas are smoke-free – the AR Clean Air on Campus Act of 2009 mandates that smoking is prohibited at all state-supported postsecondary institutions. An amendment in 2015 added e-cigarettes to the ban.

“For decades, the tobacco industry has targeted minority communities,

particularly African Americans, with intense advertising and

promotional efforts.”

33 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Pledge to Establish Tobacco Free Campuses

________________________________

In 2015, the Truth Initiative and Shaw University hosted 33 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to kick-off the Tobacco-Free HBCU Campus Initiative.

Led by the Truth Initiative and former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, the initiative provided grants to HBCUs to assist them in their efforts to establish comprehensive tobacco-free policies on their campuses.

The campuses were charged with: 1) participate in a task force to assess tobacco use on their campus; 2) develop a public-education campaign to support establishment of a comprehensive tobacco-free policy on the campus.

The Truth Initiative is a national public health organization that is inspiring tobacco-free lives and building a culture where all youth and young adults reject tobacco.
