LacrimadiMorroisanancientnativevarietalfromtheMarcheregionontheAdriaticcoastofItaly.ThestoriedhistoryofLacrimastretchesbacktothe1100s,whenHolyRomanEmperorFedericoBarbarossawasabigfanofthevarietal.AsItalybegantofocusmoreoninternationalexportsinthe1970sand1980s,Lacrimawasonthebrinkofextinction.LucianoLanditookituponhimselftoplantthenativevarietalonhisfamily’sestate,andsetouttomakeaworld-classwine.Therest,astheysay,ishistory.LacrimaisnowseenasoneofthemostdistinctiveanddeliciousnativevarietalsofItaly,andLandiisseenasthestarproducer,creditedwithbringingbackthevarietalintoitsfullglory.Landi’suniqueandrecognizablestyleoriginatesfromitsvineyardsinBelvedereOstrense,onthehillsoverlookingtheseaat250metersabovesealevel,NorthofJesiintheprovinceofAncona.Forcenturiesvineshavethrivedhere,becauseofthemanyhoursofsunshine,alternatedbycoolnightsandseabreezesthatmitigatethebadweatherofthecoldermonths.Inadditiontothisidealclimate,thelooseandlimysoilisidealforredberriedvines.ThewinerywasfoundedinthefiftiesbySergioLandiwhoowned4hectaresoflandwherehecultivatedLacrimadiMorrod'Albaandothervarietals.TodayhisgrandsonLucianomanagestheestate,whichcoversaterritoryof20hectares,ofwhich16hectaresarewithvines.Afterthenewcantina,builtin1994fortheproductionofwine,anundergroundcellarwascreatedforthe'elevage'ofwinesinwoodenbarrelsandaginginbottle.Thewholeproductionprocessismanagedwithgreatattentioninordertobestenhancethepotentialofeachgrapeofeachharvestandtogivethewinescharactertraitsofstyleandquality.
