Opened in 2009 following atwo-year refurbishmentprogramme made possiblethrough a partnership with theArchdiocese of Liverpool andover half a million pounds ofinvestment from the EuropeanRegional Development Fund,the former St. Mary of theAngels church is now LiverpoolPhilharmonic at the Friary, arecording and rehearsal venue.

Rehearsal spaceWith an acoustically treated main space, flexibility andnumerous breakout rooms, Liverpool Philharmonic atthe Friary is an ideal space for rehearsals for all kindsof activity and is available for hire.

Currently used by the Royal Liverpool PhilharmonicOrchestra and Choir, Liverpool Philharmonic YouthOrchestra, and West Everton Children’s Orchestra.

The Lady: A Homage to Sandy Denny, a MusicBeyond Mainstream project, with a unique line-up ofartists including some of Denny’s former colleaguesand friends including members of Bellowhead, JerryDonahue, Maddy Prior, Joan Wasser (Joan AsPolicewomen), Thea Gilmore and Green Gartside hasbeen based at Liverpool Philharmonic at the Friaryfor rehearsals before an eight date tour visitingLiverpool, London, Brighton, Gateshead,Basingstoke, Nottingham, Manchester and Coventry.

The Irish Sea Sessions, project featuring a 14-strongband of traditional and contemporary musicianscreated the inagural concert in 2010 at the venue andrehearsed prior to tour to Belfast, Derry /Londonderry and Liverpool in the following year.A new Irish Sea Sessions will be created at the Friarythis year.

RecordingsMajor recording labels including EMI Classics, Deccaand AVIE have recorded at Liverpool Philharmonicat the Friary with young rising stars in classicalmusic including Tine Thing Helseth (trumpet),Benjamin Grosvenor (piano), and HJ Lim (piano).
