R ight now my brain is being squatted by a cantankerous elderly lady whohas been put into a hospice because she is about to die. She’s bitter andbrittle and more than a little bit scared – and she’s making quite a lot of
noise up there in my head. But as usual, I’m getting ahead of myself.Good news came by email a few weeks back. My delightful publishers Book
Guild have now read my new novel and would like to publish it next year. Iam, of course, delighted. To write and have publishedone novel was both exciting and thrilling but tohave the second one in print is simply fantastic.
It took me over a year to write the new one,which is not a sequel, and the work isn’t overyet. I am about to embark on the edit, a slowprocess in which the lovely Carol will help mehone the book into a shiny new being.
It has, though, left me at rather a looseend. Even though May was filled with therigours of the Festival and the Fringe, and jolly good it all was I must say, there has been something missing in my life. My manuscript.
Anyone who spots me out and about withmy laptop open has probably witnessed me atwork on my manuscript. I know that I should besat in some office somewhere with a pot ofstrong coffee and lots of peace. Butpeace doesn’t work for me. Peace andquiet I find distracting. I write bestwhen I am sat in a bar or a cafe andalone. Somehow I find the bustlesoothing and I can work.
With the new book out of my hands Ibecame fidgety. Mr R told me to makethe most of it, but it didn’t work. I wasrestless, and in need of a solution.
That’s when Elizabeth moved in andoccupied my brain. She’s been there for a while now and I suppose I’m gettingused to her and her foul language. Of course Elizabeth using my brain as herconduit has found her way onto the page. Well, several pages. She’s a bitstage-struck, too, so the pages are sort of play-like right now, but who knowswhat will happen. She may just move out, or die leaving things unfinished.
The new book is called Three Kinds Of Lies, and tells the story of a manwho gets himself into a bit of a pickle when he falls in love with the husbandof a friend’s friend. Any resemblance to real life I’m calling research.Research done a long time ago. I must go now though, Elizabeth needs me.

The Landlady on tenants’ comings and goings

M any thanks to myone or two regularreaders who got in
touch to ask why I wasmissing from a couple ofrecent issues. My lack ofappearance was not downto holiday or, indeed,laziness; but more down toan interesting illness thatreally knocked me for six.
Work took me away forthe trip of a lifetime toSudan to visit the KenanaSugar Company with a brief stop inEgypt along the way. I rememberwell the two-hour drive aroundCairo looking at the mosques (andseveral burnt-out residentialblocks) against the background ofthe first rays of morning sun.
In Khartoum, we stayed in oneof Sudan’s most famous buildings,the quite breathtaking BurjAl-Fateh Hotel. Thebuilding’s oval curvedfacade is similar to that ofCity Hall in London. Ittherefore resembles amotorcycle helmet but issaid to have been designedwith the image of a sailing boat in mind. It is known as ‘Gaddafi’s Egg’ though(having been funded by Libya and, well, resembling an egg).
The Burj Al-Fateh overlooks the hectic spot where the Blue Nile and WhiteNile meet to form the Nile. This is a site of major geographic interest. Thejunction creates three distinct conurbations of which Khartoum is one (theothers are Omdurman and Bahri).
There are four communities in fact. The fourth is Tuti Island which is in themiddle of the intersection. Tuti Bridge, the first suspension bridge in Sudan,was inaugurated by President Al-Bashir in 2009 to connect the island withKhartoum. The view of Tuti Bridge and Tuti Island from the hotel is trulystaggering – and a lot to take in from the upper floors.
I’ve never entered a British Embassy so visiting that in Khartoum wassomewhat of a treat. The building is heavily fortified, as one would expect, butit looks like Crawley Town Hall (well, what I imagine Crawey Town Hall to looklike). I will be eternally grateful to His Excellency, the British Ambassador, forsuggesting that I might wish to rush back to my hotel when I changed colourduring our meeting.
My illness might have been caused by me getting extremely tired ordrinking the water but I’m sticking with it being down to eating raw camelhump and lung – local delicacies, I’m told.

O ne of my long-term lodgers is moving out. She has lived here for over ayear, but had a bit of a row – well, a lot of a row actually – with The BigDaughter at my birthday party. The atmosphere since then has been
tense to say the least, so it’s probably for the best that she goes. The roomhas already been taken by a Polish guy who works with The Big Son, so he hasa pedigree of sorts. The Big Son is a pretty good judge of character and doesnot blanket everyone with a veil of hatred in the manner of his older sister.
As a landlady, I don’t like change of any sort, as it means void periods (i.e.periods of time when I don’t make money) and every time a tenant threatensto move I fear that I’m going to plunge headfirst down the slippery slope, neverto return or worse still, never to go on holiday again. In an ideal world, tenantswould move in forever and neverbother you again, especially if a newboiler or something equally expensiveis required. Imagine my horror,therefore, when the tenant who rentsthe ground floor of my house from meannounced that she will also bemoving out at the end of the month.
Fortunately, I have another tenantnear Seven Dials, who has been after my ground floor flat for ages. Withinseconds, she was round to look at it and took it on the spot. This is all welland good, but it leaves me with the Seven Dials property to rent out. Allweekend, I was toying with the idea of selling it as there is a very largeamount of equity in there.
I imagined myself going on even more foreign holidays, building an outdoordining room at the end of my garden and having my roof properly leaded. Alas,now that I’m back with The New Boyfriend (he refuses to go away), I wouldimagine that most of that equity would be drip-fed to certain down-at-heelbars in and around central Brighton. But it was really The Small Daughter whoput me right by saying I would be crazy to sell it as I’m making money fromthe rent, what with the low interest rates and all. What do they teach them inschool these days?
So, thanks to my nine-year-old captain of industry, this afternoon I calledup my old – thoroughly reliable and brilliant – letting agent. Even though Ihaven’t spoken to them for over five years, they immediately knew who I wasand an appointment was made.
The flat is in good order, but the letting agent said that in order to get topdollar, I should paint it and resand the floorboards. I should also, apparently,put a splashback behind the bathroom basin, which means, horror of horrors,a bit of tiling might be in order. I can feel a headache coming on...

T reeGreen, a start-up firm based in Scotland, haslaunched a unique energy saving device whichreduces customers’ power bills and carbon
emissions. The Energy EGG, currently being trialled byone of the UK’s major energy firms, knows when a fully-powered appliance is not in use and cuts the power.
The wireless Energy EGG uses smart technology toswitch off fully-powered appliances when they are not inuse, eliminating more wasted electricity in the home thanother products on the market which simply switch offthose devices left on standby.
The Energy EGG, available on the Tesco Direct website,was created by Brian O’Reilly who was inspired to createthe device after being driven mad by his three daughters continually leavingon games consoles, TVs and stereos when they had finished using themleading to ever-increasing energy bills.
It has patent pending technology which uses a motion sensor todifferentiate between a user sitting still and an empty room, ensuring it doesnot switch appliances off when they are in use, a common problem withmotion-controlled lighting systems. Professor Graham Ault, of theDepartment of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University ofStrathclyde, said: “The Energy EGG is a simple but highly effective way ofhelping people to reduce their day-to-day power consumption. We’re lookingforward to watching the Energy EGG go from strength to strength.”

What’s the damage?The first step in making your homemore eco-friendly is to work out howmuch energy you’re using, and whereyou can save. Manyenergy companies have cottoned onto this too, and offer a range of onlineand in-home tools to help youmonitor and reduce energy use – for example, Eon sell a range of eco-friendly ‘power-down’ gadgets (thatautomatically switch off electricalwhen not in use) and monitors in
their online shop. And remember –lower energy use means lowercarbon emissions – you can trackthe changes to your home’s carbonfootprint at carbontrust.co.uk.
Water levelsAre you using too much water? Check your home for leaking pipesand dripping taps or cisterns, and getthem fixed. If you have a water meter,you can check for leaks by switchingoff all taps and appliances, andwatching to see if the meter keepsrunning. Save water for the garden orcar-washing in a water-butt if youcan – they’re incredibly cheap, andeasy to install. Installing a ‘low flow’toilet will also conserve water. Losingyour lawn, and replacing it withdecking or stone will help to drought-proof your garden, too.
Keeping it warmAccording to the Energy SavingTrust, insulating your loft could saveyou around £250 per year. You’llsave even more if you insulate wallsand draughty wooden floors – youshould recoup most outlay in a year

Lights & electricalsWhen major appliances like fridges,dishwashers and even TVs come upfor replacement, invest in new low-energy models – look for the blue‘energy saving recommended’ logo,which means an appliance meets orexceeds the government specifiedenergy requirements. Make sureyou’re using energy saving lightbulbs, and always switch off lights,appliances and chargers that aren’tin use. Some appliances use up to 25per cent of their normal power instandby mode – switch them off, andwatch your bills come down.
Get the balance right Finally, turn your thermostat down –reducing room temperature by only 1°Ccould cut your heating bills by up to 10per cent. Make sure that heating andhot water is timed to come on onlywhen you need it, and check that thecylinder thermostat (which controlsthe temperature of your hot water) isset to no higher than 60°C.

S trange as it may sound, forsome the last recession meanta move up in the world. Let me
explain. With fewer mortgages beingmade available and property pricesdestabilised, people decided to stayput. Moving was, for many, not anaffordable option.
But for some moving does becomea necessity. Growing families needmore space therefore if moving onwas not possible it was time to moveon up – into the loft space.
Soundhouse has specialised inloft conversions for many years nowand have appeared on these pagesbefore. Over that time they haveearned a fantastically strongreputation for their work as I wasonce again to find out.
My first stop was in TivoliCrescent, a solid late Victorianterraced property with good sizedrooms but, for the family, one fewerthan they wanted. They loved thehouse and loved the location too, sothe only way was up. I climbed thestairs and immediately observed

one of the key features of aSoundhouse project: the transitionfrom the original building to the newsuite of rooms was seamless. Theteam is brilliant at blending thingsthrough; skirtings, newell posts,banisters and rails are all made tomatch. If anything distinguishesthem from the old, it is that they arebetter made and better fitted.
In Tivoli Crescent the roof spacehas become a master bedroom suitewith a stylish bathroom and a wallof windows that overlook the leafysurrounding gardens. The ownersare delighted. They had moved fromLondon where they had already hadexperience of converting a loft.What impressed them aboutSoundhouse was threefold: the
price, the quality of the work andwork practice, and the team’sopenness to them being involved inthe complete process.
“It was great that Nick and theteam look after so much for you,from the design and planning sideof things but it’s also great that wecould get involved in sourcingthings too,” they said.
It’s a common thread to this storythat wherever Soundhouse have beeninvolved the clients are full of praise.In some cases the relationship goesbeyond a single project and contactis often maintained, with pastcustomers happy to show potentialclients the standard of the work done.
And the work is of the veryhighest standard. At Soundhouse
there is no such thing as a ‘B team’:they tend to work on one project at atime with crossovers at thebeginning and the end for newprojects. It means that clientsalways get the best.
Anyone who lives in one ofBrighton’s older properties will havenoticed there are very few trulyright-angled corners. It’s a commonproblem in older buildings and onethat can lead to lots of problems.When Soundhouse build theyestablish a squared structure withinthe existing framework. It meansthat from that point on every stageof the build is true – and theplasterers, tilers, carpet layers,paper hangers and fitted furniturebuilders are all working within thevery best possible circumstances.
It’s a factor that becomes veryapparent when I visit Maldon Roadwhere the team has built a luxuriousbathroom and master bedroom in theroof. The clean and perfect lines havebeen essential in making the complextiles chosen by the client work. Hadthey not been level or square theeffect could have been disastrous,but the results are stunning, bold andconfident, but also clean and cool.And in the bedroom the fittedwardrobes were designed and built bya family friend who loved working withthe precision of the structural build.But the real star of the show here is astriking lantern light. It fills the roomwith natural light and is new productfrom the Velux range, a stylishlymodern take on a classic design.

My final stop on the tour takes meto Exeter Street. Here a client whohad the company convert their loft awhile back has called in the team tomake a massive change to theirground floor. The entire end sectionof the property has been opened up.The two receptions are now one andthe wall and window that once facedthe narrow passage at the side of theold kitchen have gone and theopening leads into the vast newkitchen and dining area.
It’s a clever design that reallyopens up the space without losingthe period character of the originalrooms. The joist that supports thefloor above the two original receptionrooms has been cunningly built intothe space between the ceiling andthe floor above and is virtuallyinvisible. It means the room is nowone continuous space and not tworooms joined by an arch.
In the kitchen area the newly builtextension has a pitched roof thatrises to join the older part of thehouse. The use of old London brickgives the space a cool, industrial look.
Not surprisingly there is a waitinglist for Soundhouse of four to fivemonths. But it’s not wasted time andplenty can be done in terms of design,planning and permissions. Clients canbook a slot on an estimated price –and the company’s pricing policy is assound as their building standards. Bykeeping overheads to a minimum – noshop front or fancy signage, just theirsignature VW pick-up truck – and apolicy of being as environmentally
friendly and ecologically sound aspossible, they come in firmly in themiddle of the market, not the cheapestbut not the most expensive either.
The man behind Soundhouse isNick, as committed a business manas you are likely to meet.
