Ooh, my back don’t half hurt. It’s my own fault I know. I eat too much,exercise too little and have terrible posture. Even as I type those words Ican feel myself momentarily correct my stoop, only to slump back into

Quasimodo-mode almost immediately. If I stand up straight I’m a good inchor so taller and as we all know – every inch really counts.

The remedy of course is exercise and diet. I oftenhave the intention, but the flesh is weak,well, let me be honest, the intentionis weak too, feeble in fact.

The idea of a gym fills me withdread. The sea, tempting as it mightseem, is cold and I no longer havethe nerve to ride a bike. Mr R givesme frequent prods in the lowerspine and tells me not to slump, and Ido try, but it’s so hard.

And of course it aches, it achesbecause I do it all wrong.

Sometimes it aches so muchthat I have to take action, and bythat I seek a massage. Over theyears I have had many, I have beenanointed with oils and unguents,rubbed with sponges and flowerextracts, shells, grit, rubble andtons of pebbles. You name it, I’veprobably given it a try. And manyhave worked well in a temporaryway, which is all I should expect.

Last week I was feeling distinctly hunched and so I booked in to Aloka for amassage therapy. There I was greeted by a stunning willowy blonde lady who,after a chat, decided that I needed a deep stimulating massage. I love Aloka, thefood’s great but this was a first. And I knew from the minute I met her that itwould be good because she shook me by the hand.

It wasn’t the manners that impressed but the power of the shake. Strong,very strong, bordering on macho uncle strength. Shaken, and I was, I knew thatthis young lady would certainly have the power to knock my aching musclesinto shape, which she duly did.

An hour later I left feeling really good, and that feeling has lasted all week.She was that great combination of gentle and persuasive, my body relaxed andthe tension fell away. Bless her, too, for not giving me the ‘too fat and notenough exercise’ lecture. I t really is hard to say whichof a handful of remotelyavailable sites in Brighton

and Hove would have beenmost suitable as the home ofthe Albion. To recap, Brighton &Hove Albion left the GoldstoneGround in 1997 for Gillingham;left Gillingham for Withdeanin 1999; and left Withdeanfor Falmer in 2011. It isamazing to think thatBrighton & Hove CityCouncil granted planningpermission for Falmer backin 2002 and that it wasn’tuntil September 2007,after appeal deadlines hadexpired, that fullpermission was granted. 

I must admit, Ipersonally am notcomfortable withdevelopment on the green spaces aroundBrighton and Hove but I do accept thatthe home of our local football team isvery much a special case. Falmer was theright choice all things considered.

The capacity of The American ExpressCommunity Stadium at Falmer is said tobe 22,374 (I haven’t counted the seats)but there is room to increase this tosomething in the region of 35,000. It was designed by KSS Architects, a London-based firm that specialises in sports projects; especially large ones. I visitedrecently and was shown the north and west stands which contain offices anddining facilities respectively. The pitch is not visible from outside the hugestructure and it is hard to describe just how uplifting it was to see it afteremerging from the service areas behind. I can only imagine what it’ll be like whenfull to capacity on a match day.

As an aside, the whole area really has changed since I studied at Sussex. Smallthings are different such as the university entrance, the tunnel under the A27and the bridge over the railway line. There are big differences, too, though.Massive new buildings have sprouted up around the Sussex campus, and on thatof Brighton opposite. Indeed, the whole Lewes Road corridor is changing,seemingly for the better.

The first game has already taken place at American Express CommunityStadium, which saw Brighton beating Eastbourne 2-0 in the season final of theSussex Senior Cup. Hopefully, a similar result will be the outcome on Saturday 6August when they play their first League game of the season.

T he Big Son’s 21st birthday is approaching and I am at a loss as to whatto buy for him. I initially thought I might buy him driving lessons, but itseems a little too staid a gift to me. It’s almost like buying someone a

set of night classes or a course of colonic irrigation. I mean, it might beuseful in the long run, but it also requires effort on the side of The Big Son.Besides, he has never shown the remotest interest in driving – possiblybecause he’s constantly ferried around by The Girlfriend and various mates. Ihave never driven and see no point in it, so for me it would be like donatingmoney to an unjust cause and further polluting our filthy planet. I havetherefore decided to purchase a holiday voucher for him as, like his mother,he likes nothing more than a trip abroad. He is currently sampling the, ahem,cultural delights of Ibiza with 20 friends and when he comes back I amhoping that myself and his father (who lives far up north) are going to takehim and the family out for dinner.

This is a more complexmanoeuvre than you’d imagine, asThe Big Childrens’ Father and TheBig Daughter are not speaking toeach other. In spite of variousefforts by other family membersand much respected friends, neverthe twain has met. In fact, Palestineand Israel are more likely to bereconciled before The Big Daughterand her father...

The Big Daughter is currentlysunning herself in Magaluf and wewill therefore resume the international peace-keeping talks on her return. In the meantime, not breaking with my usual tradition, I have been renting out The Big Son’s room while he is away to an Egyptian short-term. Althoughhe is only here for eight days, he is already more trouble than my Italian andmy Spaniard put together. He keeps coming into the living room and foistinghis chocolate fingers at me which, by the way, is not a euphemism...

He insisted on seeing the room before he moved into it, then when hearrived to take a look, he brought four other foreign students with him. At thetime, in an unusual scene of urban domestic bliss, I was in the kitchen bakingand listening to Radio 4. The five foreign students trooped through the kitchengawping and grinning inanely at me. I felt like a waxwork entitled ‘modernwoman at home in Brighton 2011’. Somewhat strangely,I was reminded of a waxwork atthe LondonDungeon, inwhich DrCrippen isimmersing oneof his victims in an acid bath. I can’t helpwondering howmany students Icould fit in mybath, chocolatefingers and all...

Simply shuttersWooden shutters are an enduringcharacteristic of some of Brighton’speriod seaside properties. They’vebeen used through the centuries forprivacy, protection and light control– and they look great, too. Here inthe UK, shutters are usually placed

on the inside of windows, but inmost Mediterranean countries theyare fixed to external walls for addedprotection and heat control in thesummer months. Shutters providesome privacy, blocking the view ofdownstairs rooms without cutting alllight, and are also an additionalbarrier to burglars.

Solid-panelled shutters are thetraditional choice for period homes,and solid, flat or ‘plantation’ (Louvre)designs give a modern, colonial feel.Plain or painted wooden finisheswork best – the simpler, the better.They can also be custom-built to suityour windows, with ‘tier-on-tier’designs that allow for top or bottomhalves to be opened independently,

or half height ‘café’ styles forprivacy. Pair with curtains in thewinter months for extra insulation.

Beautiful blindsTheir neat, economical designmakes blinds an ideal choice forsmaller spaces and contemporary-style homes. They’re also useful forawkward windows. Curtains can becumbersome in a large or squarebay, yet blinds will slot neatly in.

Roller blinds give a simple,modern look and are very spaceefficient. For contemporary livingspaces, blinds made from semi-opaque, textured materials allowsome light in while maintainingprivacy. Venetian (‘slatted’) blindsare popular, and versatile enoughfor multi-purpose spaces, studiesand studios. They can also be anaffordable alternative to shutters.
