Note from the Principal
Hello Community Members,
The beginning of the school year is always exciting. We have had a
great start to the year. Classrooms have been busy getting settled
with expectations and opening units. A character theme this year
will be Empathy. We want our students to be empathetic and will
have class and assembly activities to focus on developing more
empathy.
Other activities that will start soon are volleyball and cross-country
running for older students. Watch for notes/messages about
practices/meets.
Communication is important between home and school. Each
student has a day planner (thanks to the SCC) that will be used for
notes home. Please feel free to send notes (absences, appointments,
etc.) back. Please take some time and read through the first section
of the day planners as it has some important school information.
Email, newsletters, and the school sign will be used to
communicate activities.
I look forward to a great year!
Mr. Dean Hignett

Students and guests are asked to not

sprays) to ensure the health of those
who are bothered by these scents.
Scent Aware Policy
thank you
A special thank you to our SCC for the beaut iful day-planners. We are excited to use these in our communicat ion between home and school. Please take some time to read through the beginning pages of the day-planners as we have included Student Guidelines, Policies and other informat ion that will be helpful to students and guardians throughout the school year.
Laird School is a nut aware school
so we ask that nuts and nut prod-
ucts not be sent to school.
We are also asking parents or
guardians to refrain from sending
any classroom treats to school
(including birthday treats, holi-
days, etc.). Many of our students
have food allergies and/or alter-
nate dietary requirements, there-
fore our policy is not to accept
any.

If you are new to Laird School,
we want to welcome you and let you know about Pizza Fridays! Every
Friday that students attend we order pizza from our local store (thank
you, BK Foods!) at a cost of $3.00 per slice. Students are welcome to
order pepperoni, cheese or ham & pineapple pizza, but MUST complete
the pizza order slip produced by the school (we will send some home
and blank forms are available online at our school website,
www.spiritsd.ca/lairdschool). Payment may be made the day of the pizza
orders (prior to 9:30 am) or families may purchase a “punch card” in
advance (contact the school for more information). Please remember
that even if a punch card is purchased, each individual student must still
complete a pizza order slip (one slip per student) so that we know the
type and number of slices to order for each student.
Kindergarten students attend on EVEN days this year. Grades 7 and 8 go to
Waldheim on EVEN days in the afternoon until the end of January.
Terry Fox Day will be on September 23rd. Please mark this date on your
calendar and watch for ways to support this event.
Following a wonderful year of
focusing on kindness, this year
we are making “empathy” an
additional priority in our school.
Please watch for ways to discuss
this important topic with students
this year.
