The Eden Alternative: It Can Be Different!
Kings Way Care Centre and Kennebec Manor have been on a mission to change how we care for people in long term care.
Elders living in nursing homes should be able to continue to live their lives and not just exist to be cared for. Adopting
the Eden philosophy has helped us fulfill our mission.
Please enjoy this story of how the Eden Alternative Philosophy started…………….
Dr. Bill Thomas’s story, founder of the Eden Alternative
In the early 1990's Dr. Thomas, an emergency room physician, had an opportunity to work at a Long Term Care facility.
A life changing moment occurred for Dr Thomas, at this time, when he visited a lady with a rash on her arm. He looked
at the rash, ordered an ointment and was about to turn away when the elderly woman stopped him by grabbing his arm.
He turned back to the lady and says he found himself looking into the most beautiful blue eyes he had ever seen but
these eyes were filled with tears. When he asked the lady what was wrong, she stated simply “I am just so lonely”.
Hearing those words flustered Dr. Thomas. He searched his medical textbooks and found nothing to heal loneliness. He
realized that in spite of his excellent Harvard Medical school education, he was failing this lady.
Dr. Thomas could not stop thinking about the elder with the beautiful blue eyes and his other residents in the nursing
home as well. Dr Thomas then decided to do something very uncommon for a young, busy Doctor; he spent three days in
the Nursing Home just sitting and observing the elders.
Over time, he witnessed that the institutional model of care breeds three deadly plagues of the human spirit: Loneliness,
Helplessness, and Boredom. These feelings can rob the human spirit. He knew he could treat the medical problems but
how do you treat problems of the spirit? People don’t want to live without companionship, fun and opportunity. People
are not meant to live in cold, sterile environments. People need loving companionship, spontaneity and a
feeling of worth and value. “We need places more like gardens…..a place to live and grow!” And thus, the Eden Alterna-
tive was born.
We fell in love with this concept at Kings Way and Kennebec. Our board and our staff decided that we would adopt the
Eden philosophy and we are so glad we did. It has made such a difference in the lives of the elders living in our homes
and we have only just begun.
Although the Eden Philosophy has become part of our everyday life, it is a 20 year journey--changing the way we have
always done things is not a walk in the park--it is hard and takes a long time. We are proud and grateful to our staff and
our elders as they are a vital part of our community at Kings Way and Kennebec.
We welcome you to join us in this journey and hope you enjoy this and upcoming features and discussions as we share
this Eden journey together!

For the Lord God is a Sun and Shield; the Lord bestows grace and favour and glory! No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in You (leaning and believing on You, committing
all and confidently looking to You, and that without fear or misgiving)!
Psalm 84, Amplified Bible.
