Chapter N2 - Humble, TX
Summer is here and the heat is on. We had wonderful weather for
Spring and we were lucky to be able to take advantage of the cooler
weather to ride. Now with the hot days it’s hard to get really excited
about riding in the heat, but we just have to remember to ride early
and late in the day and stay hydrated. Staying hydrated is not just for
the day of the ride, but you should prepare your body by hydrating a
few days before and after the ride. The article below is copied from
RoadRUNNER – Motorcycle Touring and Travel Magazine Touring
Tips.
Did you know that your body is mostly water? The average human body contains around 10 to 12 gallons of it. With high temperatures across the nation, we thought it would be a good idea to revisit the importance of keeping hydrated. Water performs several critical functions in your body such as:
Transporting nutrients and waste
Maintaining normal blood pressure
Protecting and cushioning joints and organs
Regulating body temperature
Lowering the risk of dehydration and heat stroke When it’s hot your body automatically begins secreting water from its stored supply, in the form of sweat. Your body is cooled as the sweat evaporates into the air from the skin. This evaporative cooling process works most efficiently if a rider is wearing tight-fitting synthetic clothing under his or her ventilated protective gear. Synthetic material keeps mois-ture close to the skin, while allowing air to circulate through it, which helps maximize the cooling effect of the water lost through perspiration. A sweaty cotton t-shirt, on the other hand, is a much less efficient (and less comfortable) material for evaporative cooling. It’s vitally important to make sure that the water used for evaporative cooling is replaced in your body. But about how much is that? Let’s start with a baseline of water required for everyday activities. First, the food you consume contains a certain amount of water, (depending on what it is) and experts estimate that it fulfills approximately 20-percent of your daily requirements. That leaves another two liters of water needed for normal activities. Out on the road, on 90-plus de-gree days, riders are well advised to consume as much additional water as possible, probably an extra one or two liters. Here are some of the symptoms of insufficient hydration:
Dark urine
Dry mouth
Loss of energy
Muscle weakness
Confusion
Headache
Dizziness/lightheadedness

A LOVING JOURNEY By Linda Stich
The time has come for us to focus on providing George with comfort and the quality of life he deserves since his illness has progressed over the last 16 months. George has spent the last 2 weeks in the hospital courageously struggling with multiple medical issues. He has endured tests, treatments, etc. valiantly. As a family we have elected palliative care in our home which is to make his cancer and associated symptoms less severe and traumatic. We will concentrate on his comfort, remem-bering past activities, go to places he hasn’t been if possible or wants to revisit, visit friends and a host of other activities. If you would like to be a part of this journey please let me know. Any pictures you have
would be appreciated. Thanks for your prayers, comforting words, visits, and thoughts.
(Water: The Essential Riding Companion, cont.)
Consumption of certain types of liquids, like alcoholic and caffeinated drinks, can accelerate dehydration because they usually have a diuretic effect on the body. Here’s a simple four-step strategy for maintaining proper hydration:
Drink water early and often: before, during, and after the ride.
Wear evaporative devices such as water absorbent neckties and/or vests.
Replace electrolytes lost through perspiration by eating fruit or consuming decaffeinated sports drinks.
Wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible, and put sunscreen on any areas left exposed.
Staying well hydrated on hot days will help keep you healthy out on the road and improve your enjoyment of the ride.
Remember “BEE SEEN IN 2016.”

Chapter N2 - Humble, TX
Hello My Friends:
It’s time for another safety article and as I was thinking
of a subject, I thought about responsibility. That is a big word
with big meaning when it comes to riding a motorcycle. Let’s
take a look at how responsibilities affects us and what ours are.
We will start with our bikes. It is our responsibility to
maintain our bike. This includes all functional aspects and also
registration and insurance. Most GWRRA members take so
much pride in their bike that cleanliness and working properly
is their first thought, but don’t forget the paper work. Also our
riding gear, are they adequate and in proper condition?
Now that our bike is in great working order, gear is
good and we are legal to be on the road our responsibilities are done. Well no, we should be mentally ready to ride. We are
responsible for ourselves on the road and if we aren’t in physical condition or mentally prepared we shouldn’t be riding. If
you are upset about something, it is easy to say I’ll go for a ride and calm down but this isn’t a safe time to ride.
Ok, so we have met our responsibilities up till now. Can we just ride and forget everything else? No we can’t. Often
we ride in groups and we have responsibilities there also. Whenever we ride in groups, someone is in the lead position. In our
chapter, it is someone whom we trust and have confidence in. It is someone, with good judgment who is prepared to lead the
group from the starting point all the way to our destination. Someone, who has a planned route and shares it with all who join
the ride. We have leaders like Mike, Randy, and Steve who accept this responsibility. Of course, there are others that lead and
many more to come. These people were the first to come to mind as I write this article. Our Road Captains have been leading
our rides for a few years now. We don’t think twice about following him/her because they never let us down. We always ar-
rive safely when we follow our Road Captain. We are very fortunate to have such a capable Road Captain in the lead!
We also have another Road Captain position, to bring up the rear of the group. This is our Drag bike, or Tail Gunner.
These two, (Lead & Drag) work as a team to ensure the safety of the group. The Drag has a responsibility to let the group
know what is going on around us and to keep the lead informed of changing conditions. They inform us about things, like ech-
oing information about a turn – in advance of the turn; when a car is attempting to pass the group on a 2-lane road; or when a
car is passing on the right when we are on the highway. Often the lead and drag will be in such harmony that he or she will
secure a lane just as the lead calls for it. They must communicate well with each other and with the rest of the group. So with
the Lead and Drag watching out for our safety and guiding us on our journey, we don’t have any more responsibilities. We
know we can enjoy the ride and watch the scenery with these two in charge.
Wrong!!! We still have a lot of responsibilities. First and foremost, is to ride your own ride. Even in a group how
you ride is up to you. We are responsible to pass on the hand signals from the Lead, such as for single file, stagger formation,
pointing out potholes and road kill, sand in the corners, and other hazards. We need to be aware of our surroundings, because
hazards aren’t just at the front or rear of the group. The Road Captains only guide us. The choices we make are our responsi-
bility. Don’t think you can relax because you are in the middle of the pack. We need to maintain safe spacing with the other
bikes around us. This is very important, because if we leave too much space four wheel vehicles might move in and make
staying safe more complicated. At the same time we must leave enough space to stop in an emergency situation. GWRRA
teaches the two second rule. Stay two seconds behind the bike in front of you. We must stay alert. We must remember that,
just because our Road Captain is leading us, we are not excused from thinking for ourselves and riding our own ride. Respon-
sibility falls on everyone. Lead, Drag, Middle, Rider and Co-rider each has a place and a job to do. Each counts on the other,
but ultimately it is your life. So accept the responsibility to check your bike, check your gear, watch out for each other and
protect yourself. Let’s make every ride safe and FUN!!!

Chapter N2 - Humble, TX
Every so often I think about what makes me happy to be a member of Chapter N2. What makes me swell with pride, when I put on my yellow and black shirt chapter shirt, my vest, and all of my bumble bee bling? Is it the riding, attending the gatherings, going to our monthly social dinners or our monthly breakfasts, or any of our other many events we have during the month and year? You know - it is all of these things, but much more. What makes me the happiest is being able to share my time, laughing, stories, and fun with all my friends in Chapter N2. It is also so very exciting when we have new members join our chapter. I now have new friends to share the rides, gatherings, dinners, breakfasts, sto-ries, and memories of our lives with these new mem-
bers. In May, Chapter N2 was blessed to have Ed and Charlotte LeBlanc and Guylan and Missy Roberts join the family. As Steve and Billie Fleming talked about in the attached article our “Friend Basket’ grew in May.
If we make sure our friend basket has flexible sides, we can always find room to add new friends and grow
our chapters, build new relationships, and enrich our lives beyond measure. When we leave a Winger behind,
we run the risk of losing a good friend.
None of us has the promise of tomorrow because “life has an expiration date.” We should take every oppor-
tunity to expand and enrich our relationships. This is a short life we live and there is no time better than the
present to add to that list of friends we hold so dear.
Through the years during our association with GWRRA, we have made many friends in our great organiza-
tion. GWRRA has been a vehicle for us to add to our friend basket on a regular basis. The more we become
involved, the more friends we seem to make. How can you beat that? We’re having the time of our life and
hope everyone else is doing the same. If we are not friends yet, it may be because we haven’t met yet. None
of us has too many friends so let’s all add to our friend basket, we have plenty of room.

Crazy Camping Tricks that will Make Your Life Easier, Cont. By Matt Hershberger (April 4, 2014)
WE’VE ENTERED THE AGE where ‘glamping’ is a thing. Glamor camping, for those who mercifully had not heard about it till now, is a type of outing where one sleeps less under a tent and more in a fully appointed home that just hap-pens to be under a canvas roof. Though the glamping trend feels a bit too much like the One Percent’s approach to the outdoors, glampers do have a point: This is the 21st century, and there’s no reason we need to treat camping like we’re still cavemen. Here are some camping hacks to make your trip less chaotic and, hopefully, more enjoyable.
1. Carry a portable charcoal grill.
Charcoal in a cardboard egg carton. Light the carton. Fire started.
2. Protect
your matches.
Wooden matchboxes can get wet or crushed. Pack your matches in a plastic container — make sure they’re ‘strike anywhere’ matches — and then glue some sandpaper to the top of the container. If you’re camping in the cold, bring a metal tin, as the plastic might break.
3. Hide your
valuables in
soap.
Especially if you’re at a fairly crowded campground and want to go for a hike, valuables can be hidden in soap. This is an old Boy Scout trick.
4. Make
calzones.
Mini calzones in cupcake tins. Can be cooked directly over the fire.
5. Smoke it
with Rose-
mary.
A nice alternative to a marinade — just put it directly on the charcoal and un-derneath the meat.

TEST CAMPING By Rex Nix
Ann and I have been refurbishing a 20’ travel trailer for our son that ultimately he could not take possession of. So, we decided to take it out and spend the weekend in it for what I call ‘test camping.’ It was inter-esting in that we backed it into our driveway, filled it with food and drink, odd and ends that would make a weekend pleasant, and then pulled it to the park, backed it into a spot, plugged it in, and sat down for dinner with Ann. It mostly went that easy. I have to say it is nice that everything has a place and it either stays there or gets put back when you finish using it so preparing to leave or setting up is so much easier. But then you need a truck to pull the camper around. So Friday evening, we pulled into Wolf Creek Park and set up in site 87 on the top end of the loop. While there, we looked at the sites around us and decided the following sites will work for us doing group camping: 89-88-87-86-85-84-83-82-81. So if we choose to do Thanksgiving here again this year, I would suggest we do these sites. We also discussed with the local park person the animals and he divulged there are two nesting eagles and one nesting bald eagle on that loop. That came as a surprise to us. We did not realize the Bald Eagle was this far south. As a matter of fact, we saw a segment on TV on Sunday evening about how the Bald Eagle is thriving in North America. As usual, we ventured out and met the neighbors, some from Houston, New Caney, Livingston, Porter, and other places. Ann and I also spent a little time checking out property in the area to see if we can find some-place to permanently park the camper and call it a weekend location. Never hurts to think about it. Saturday we saw a large line of storms coming in from the northeast, so we put the awning up and notified the neighbors it was coming. Up on the hill it seems everyone did ok in the high winds, but the folks down by the water front got beat up with many folks loosing tents and canopies. Some have ask about the proposed restroom to be built on the hill. Well, it seems there is a board of trustees that doesn’t understand why there needs to be another restroom at the facility. They don’t make money on the park, their money comes from the water being shipped to Houston. Sunday morning came much too quickly! We hooked the camper to the truck, unplugged everything, and pulled down to the dump station. Now this was a first for me. We managed to get through that experience pretty well and off we went to the house. We backed in at the house, unpacked the camper, pulled all the bed-ding and other items out to be washed, cleaned and whipped the camper down, and dropped it back at the stor-age lot. Back home and it was 12:30 p.m., time for lunch and to relax the rest of the day...Father’s Day. So thinking about it, I have to agree the hard side camper worked out quite well. I can see how folks can enjoy traveling in this type of RV. It is much easier than pulling behind a motorcycle, but then, there is no compari-son to how you see the world as you go over the mountains and around those forested curvy roads on a bike. Somehow, though, we are all looking for the same thing, what is next? Oh yea, as we were leaving the park having just pulled out and headed south over the first bridge, a Bald Eagle was pacing our truck on the driver’s side showing us all it majestic glory. What a beautiful bird!

(Shared by our own Jim Hartley)
My gosh where has June gone? It seems the time has just flown by. June was a very warm month, but we were able to get a few rides in. We made a breakfast ride to Simply Country in Moss Hill. This is always a popular ride and place to go eat breakfast. There were so many of us on this ride that we got our own room!
Then Randy had an impromptu ride to the Farmhouse Café in Onalaska. This ride ended up being a solo Chapter N2 ride – Randy Rainwater. Randy met Bubba and Carolyn Tice and Bobby Lee from Chapter C for lunch. Steve and I spent a couple of days in Galveston at the beach with Steve and Billie Fleming. What could be better then the day
after our return from the beach, we got to ride an impromptu ride to Burger Fresh in Montgomery with Randy and Sharon Rainwa-ter. Randy and Sharon Rainwater, Steve Fleming, and Steve Selig-man had done this ride a couple of months before I retired – dirty guys – but I made Randy promise to do a ‘redo’ ride. On this impromptu ride, the ‘redo’ commitment was met! It is definitely worth the ride and an empty stomach!
So, get yourself ready for a warm July, but hopefully some early morning rides and a bit of indoor events. See you on the road.

Chapter Directors - we need your help! Region H has several responsibilities at Wing Ding this year. These include: Crash Scene Enactment, Bike Show, and assisting Region F with the GWRRA store (formerly Goodie Booth). We ask that you poll your Chapter Directors for a listing of their chapter members who will be attending Wing Ding. We would like to know: Will they be on their wing? Would they like to participate in the Crash Scene? Will they help with the Bike Show? Would they help in the Goodie Booth? This year the bike show is completely different and anyone can help, even if you have no training in the arts of bike show-ing! The GWRRA store is also a lot of fun. It too will be somewhat different and a lot easier than in the past. Both of these activities can help fill your day, meeting a lot of new friends. Please respond as soon as you can, so we can start making out our list of volunteers. Remember, FREE ICE CREAM!

Chapter N2 is missing a very special person from our chapter…Mari Rich! Always bigger than
life, friendly, loving, creative, and fun, she departed from this earthly place for her heavenly home
on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at age 89. Yes, she had a lot going for her: attended Northwestern State
University of Louisiana where she received her BA degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in
Public School Administration. She also attended the University of Alabama where she received her Doctorate
in Curriculum Development and Research. She wore many hats…mother to son, Gordon Parker, Jr.; served as
a supervising teacher for student teachers from Alaska Methodist University, while working as a classroom
teacher; a School Administrator; a Teleteacher; a wife, first to Gordon Parker, Sr., and later to Paul Rich, her
sweetheart! She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Cleveland, TX; active in 3 honorary sorori-
ties, the Woman’s Club of Cleveland, and Queen Mother of the Prissy Missy Red Hatters of Cleveland.
More importantly, we knew her for her smile, friendship, personality, and hospitality (hosting Halloween par-
ties and several pig roasts at their home), and as an encourager to participate in all that GWRRA had to offer.
We salute you...sweet friend!
