A CHALLENGE FOR CHANGE
“For those who’ve come across the seas we’ve boundless plains to share”
- Australian National Anthem
The St Vincent de Paul Society Wagga Wagga Central Council multimedia competition encourages schools
to use their passion for justice to create a multimedia presentation which will be used to
advocate for the challenges faced by migrants and refugees.
A lot is possible with the power of creative expression using social media and art work. The competition
provides students with an opportunity to be creative and start thinking about global, national and local
issues which affect people fleeing their homes due to war and persecution.
The competition is designed to showcase excellence in creative multimedia or art work design and
exploration of the challenges faced by migrants and refugees. The winning entries will be displayed on the
Vinnies New South Wales website and will be used to help educate schools, young people and the wider
local community about issues within and beyond their local community.

COMPETITION INFORMATION
THE CHALLENGE…

YOU JUST DO IT ONE STEP AT A TIME.”
- MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN: AMERICAN ACTIVIST FOR THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN
WHAT?
Can you and your friends change the viewpoint of
those around you through artwork? With one
video, poster or story you can change the way
people see the world.

The power of social media and creative expression
is undeniable. With a third of the world now
accessing the internet, online content has changed
the way we think, see and feel about social issues.
Vinnies is urging you to use your passion for social
justice to create an artwork which will be used to
educate, encourage and empower
other young people to also become passionate
about the challenges faced by migrants and
refugees.
HOW?
Explore and research the issues in this topic -
use the ‘Migrant and Refugees’, ‘Discussion
Questions and Inspirations’ and ‘Resources’
pages to get you started

MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES
THE CHALLENGE…
HOW CAN YOU RESPOND TO THIS ISSUE THROUGH MULTIMEDIA?
IS THIS AN ISSUE YOU FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT, HOW WILL YOU PORTRAY THIS IN YOUR ARTWORK?
TAKE THE CHALLENGE!!
“IN COUNTRIES WHERE PEOPLE HAVE TO FLEE THEIR HOMES BECAUSE OF PERSECUTION
AND VIOLENCE, POLITICAL SOLUTIONS MUST BE FOUND, PEACE AND TOLERANCE RESTORED,
SO THAT REFUGEES CAN RETUREN HOME. IN MY EXPERIENCE, GOING HOME IS THE DEEPEST
WISH OF MOST REFUGEES.”
- ANGELINA JOLIE: ACTRESS AND REFUGEE POLITICAL ACTIVIST
BACKGROUND
Every day across the world people make the difficult decision to leave their
homes. War, persecution, environmental disaster and poverty are just some of the
reasons why a person might feel that they have to leave their family, community
or country.
Refugees leave their country because they have no other choice and fear for their
own life, safety or that of their family. Refugees also flee their country when their
government will not or cannot protect them from serious human rights abuses.
Migrants are people who move by their own choice from one place, region or
country to another particularly with the intention of making permanent
settlement or home in a new location. They may be forced to leave because they
do not have access to adequate food, water or shelter, or in order to ensure safety
and security of themselves and their families. They may move to take up
employment, or to be reunited with family members. Many leave for a combination
of reasons.
People often have more than one reason for leaving their home. Whatever the
reason, all humans have rights. Refugees have a right to international protection.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
What is the role of the local community for supporting migrants and refugees? What
can we do to break down the ‘myths’ associated with migrants and refugees living in
our community? Many refugees arrive in Australia with only the shirts on their back,
often with limited support and low English skills.

MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES
“ A BUNDLE OF BELONGINGS ISN’T THE ONLY THING A REFUGEE BRINGS TO HIS NEW COUNTRY.”
- UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES
KEY FACTS
An estimated 200 million people live outside the country in which they were born, which is about 3% of the global population of 6.5 billion.
The countries which host the most refugees are: Turkey; Pakistan; and Lebanon, who host 1 million refugees each. In comparison, Australia hosts 15 000 refugees.
There are an estimated 42.5 million people displaced by persecution and conflict in the world. This breaks down to 15.2 million refugees, 26.4 million internally
displaced persons and 895 000 asylum seekers.
Refugees face a long and difficult journey finding security and protection. Of the 14.4 million refugees of concern to the UNHCR around the world, less than 0.1% are
submitted for resettlement.
Australia’s refugee and humanitarian program resettles approximately 14 000 refugees each year (onshore and offshore), just 0.43% of the world’s claims in 2014.
The UNHCR estimates that approximately 420 500 persons are displaced per day.
Developing countries shoulder the most significant burden, hosting around 86% of the world’s refugees.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS AND INSPIRATIONS
The following questions are designed to inspire self-reflection and promote discussion about the themes and values around migrants and refugees amongst peer groups:
Who is our neighbour/brother/sister/friend and how should we care for them?
What values do we exhibit and what human rights are we promoting when we welcome those seeking asylum?
How do you like to be treated when you feel scared, lonely or unsafe?
If you were a refugee or asylum seeker how might you feel? How would you like to be treated if you arrived in a new country?
What personal attributes does it take to make a journey to a new place that requires you to leave your home and your loved ones?
Our national anthem says “for those who’ve come across the seas, we’ve boundless plains to share”. What does this mean and how does it relate to the topic of
asylum seekers?
As a country, if we have the resources to help people what do you think our responsibilities are?
The Declaration of Human Rights, which Australia has agreed to abide by says that every person is born free and equal and has the right to be safe. Is our treatment
of asylum seekers promoting these rights?
How will the next generation narrate the history that is today in relation to our treatment of those who seek asylum?
What conditions and experiences might cause someone to risk their life and the lives of their loved ones at sea?
Do you think a child seeking asylum should have the same rights as any other child?
Ghandi said “when the people lead, the leaders will follow”. What is our obligation as individuals to do something about this issue?
How can we help shape and challenge the negative attitudes in our community towards refugees and asylum seekers?
