GENERAL MESSAGE (FEMA ICS FORM 213)
MESSAGE:
Driving in the Rain Typically, the most dangerous time when on wet pavement is when it just begins to rain and the oil and dirt on the road can make itvery slick. The other dangerous time is when it’s raining very heavy and/or when puddles form on the road that can cause your car tohydroplane. You can prevent skids by driving slowly and carefully, especially on curves. Steer and brake with a light touch. When youneed to stop or slow down, do not brake hard or lock the wheels and risk a skid. Maintain mild pressure on the brake pedal.
• If you do find yourself in a skid, remain calm, ease your foot off the gas and carefully steer in the direction you want the front of thecar to go. • For cars without antilock brakes, avoid using your brakes. This procedure, known as "steering into the skid," will bring the backend of your car in line with the front. If your car has ABS, brake firmly as you "steer into the skid."
While skids on wet pavement may be frightening, hydroplaning is completely nerve-wracking. Hydroplaning happens when the waterin front of your tires builds up faster than your car's weight can push it out of the way. The water pressure causes your car to rise upand slide on a thin layer of water between your tires and the road. At this point, your car can be completely out of contact with theroad, and you are in danger of skidding or drifting out of your lane, or even off the road.
To avoid hydroplaning: • keep your tires properly inflated; • maintain good tread on your tires and replace them when necessary; • slow down when roads are wet and stay away from puddles; and • try to drive in the tire tracks left by the cars in front of you.
If you find yourself hydroplaning, do not brake or turn suddenly. This could throw your car into a skid. Ease your foot off the gas untilthe car slows and you can feel the road again. If you need to brake, do it gently with light pumping actions. If your car has anti-lockbrakes, then brake normally; the car's computer will mimic a pumping action, when necessary. Do not use your cruise control when the roads are wet. If you experience hydroplaning or start to skid the cruise control will increasethe problem before you can turn it off.

SIGNATURE: Joseph E. Kocsis POSITION: Safety Officer
DATE/TIME: 06/28/2019 1200 EDT SIGNATURE/POSITION: Joseph E. Kocsis, Safety Officer
GENERAL MESSAGE (FEMA ICS FORM 213)
MESSAGE:
NO PLACE outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area!!
If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. When you hear thunder, immediately move to safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up. Stay in safe shelter at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder.
Indoor Lightning Safety Stay off corded phones, computers and other electrical equipment that put you in direct contact with electricity. Avoid plumbing, including sinks, baths and faucets. Stay away from windows and doors and stay off porches. Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls.
Last Resort Outdoor Risk Reduction Tips If you are caught outside with no safe shelter anywhere nearby the following actions may reduce your risk: Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges or peaks Never lie flat on the ground Never shelter under an isolated tree Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter Immediately get out and away from ponds, lakes and other bodies of water Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (barbed wire fences, power lines, windmills, etc.)
Personal Safety in cars: Reported incidents and related injuries make it clear that a person inside a fully enclosed metal vehiclemust not be touching metallic objects referenced to the outside of the car. Door and window handles, radio dials, CB microphones, gearshifts, steering wheels, and other inside-to-outside metal objects should be left alone during close-in lightning events. Wesuggest pulling off to the side of the road in a safe manner, turning on the emergency blinkers, turning off the engine, putting one'shands in one's lap, and waiting out the storm.
