World Water Week in Stockholm, 28 August – 2 September, 2016

A few words about Jerash

• Jerash, is the capital and largest city of JerashGovernorate, which is situated in the north of Jordan, 48 kilometers (30 mi) north of the capital Amman;

• Jerash has a total population of 60 000 inhabitants;

• Most used activities are tourism and agriculture.

Jerash and waterThe main challenge in the water sector:

• Infrastructure problem :Old water network in Jerash, the rate is high for the need of rehabilitation and waste;

• Scarcity of water sources;

• Increased demand for water as a result of the large population – the increasement is due the result of the Syrian refugees.

Jerash and WATER SUM

• The solutions implemented with the help of the WATER SUM project:

• Work on the rehabilitation and modernization of the water network in Jerash and the division of labor into periods of time;

• Protection of available water resources;

• Increased proportion of population using the sewage network;

• Raising the efficiency of the local community in the use of water harvesting technology to provide alternative sources for domestic use.

How the WGS Initiative can contribute to water, stability and growth in Jerash:

• Future needs and opportunities;• Expand the segment involved in the local community in planning for water

security;

• Raising the efficiency of the local community, especially the optimal use of water technology;

• Broaden the participation of civil society organizations in planning for water security.

How the initiative can contribute to development

• Contribute to the development of a framework for the development of a business plan to develop a plan for water security at the local level in Jerash a knowledge-based and network of water experts. Action on the ground water analysis is thorough and proper involvement of all sectors concerned tool for e-learning (distance learning platform) for building capacity for local planning team, this has a significant impact in community development.
