DESCRIPTION

until moving from a metropolitan city, where for 50 years the only thing hunted were creepy crawling things, to the wilds of Idaho I was virtually untouched by hunting. but in Idaho it is a way of life and a way to live. the state makes money from hunting tags and tourists coming to enjoy the experience. tag are given to control animal population. if there are too many deer, more tags are given for them. conversely, too few an animal species, less tags. and the people of Idaho feed their families from the season's success or failure. myself, I have not hunted. but art is about controversy and life and hunting is a way of life for many. so, here is another season of hunting. it is in original form a 70' continuous story painting in a folding album painted on rice paper pages in a traditional Chinese style. but wordless. you must tell yourself a story. enjoy. and this magazine does not require a tag.

the HUNT....Hunting season comes againdebbi saccomanno chan

the Hunt is a wordless book. i painted the two albums as continu-

ous story paintings in folding albums. each album was done on rice

paper in a traditional Chinese style and when unfolded the paint-

ings were 70’ long...i needed a way for them to be exhibited. and

one way was to publish the albums for you see..i am not a hunter but moved from the bussling metropolis of Hous-

ton, Texas to a remote mountain area in wilds of Idaho. i watch

year after year at summer’s end neighbors preparing for hunting

season. in this area the hunt means survival for families who eat all

year from the season’s catch and conservation as well. i found that

the tags sold to hunters provide money for the conservation and

protection of the same animals that would soon be hunted. and

the number of any species hunted was strictly regulated according

to numbers. if deer herds, for instance, are not naturally culled by

predators or illness and old age, they grow too large and endanger

the natural order.
