HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES

STARTING THE INQUIRY THROUGH PROVOCATIONS

Mauricio (Art teacher): he asks the students the meaning of signs, symbols and signals. They had to write under each concept what they knew about them. Then, they started representing each word through pictures.

STARTING THE INQUIRY THROUGH PROVOCATIONS

Mauricio (Art teacher): He asks the students to find around the school signs and symbols. They had to draw them in transparencies.

WHAT I KNOW“People communicate in different ways: pousters, write, coloring”. María Simona y Luis Felipe.

WHAT I KNOW“For us a sign is a way to inform persons” santiago and Julián R.

“For us symbols is music notes” Julián E. and Juan S.

WHAT I KNOW

“For us a symbol is a form to communicate people the correct way”. Daniel A. and Angela.

“People communicate in different ways: Speak, Spanish, English”. Juan E. and Andres.

GAINING NEW PERSPECTIVES

In the art class, Mauricio says: “You will smell something and you’ll tell me what it makes you feel”Andres: “Me siento como si comiera dulce de caramelo”.Julián E: “Como dulce de menta”.Daniel: “Yo llorando, I feel cry.”

Mauricio: “Now I am going to tell you a story about an oger called Juan Pablito. Do you know shrek?Where does he live?”

“In a pantano” (answer in chorus).

Teacher continues…Juan Pablito lives in a very big castle, but everything was very cold and dark. The rooms were very big, all grey and sad and very old. Then a mouse enters to the house and says “I like your house, it is beautiful, it´s amazing, I fell happy here”

“Remember when you smelled my hands and you had different opinions, well, the mouse felt different from the oger. He says: “Let me help you”, the mouse took off his glasses, then the oger saw clearly all the beautiful colors; orange, yellow. Then, the teacher asks: “What happens when you wear glasses?Angela “It´s dark”.

Teacher says: “The colors can symbolize feelings, symbols can be everything that has a personal meaning for you.”

GAINING NEW PERSPECTIVESNow the teacher says “Close your eyes, and think that you are in a hot place. What color is the place?

Answer in chorus: “Naranja, rojo”.

Imagine that you are in a cold place like a cemetery. What color is it?

Answer in chorus: “ Negro, gris”.

GAINING NEW PERSPECTIVESMauricio (Art teacher): “Now each group is going to have a different feeling and you chose the color to

represent it on this paper. You will work in groups,”

GAINING NEW PERSPECTIVES The teacher says: “This group is

going to represent hot”

GAINING NEW PERSPECTIVES

Children attended the National Museum in

which they observed and studied different paintings and the

meaning of colors in each one. Afterwards ,they put in practiced

what they learned at the visit and draw their

conclusions:

GAINING NEW PERSPECTIVES

Daniel: “I learned to mix color”.

Angela: “I learned that colors represent objects or feelings”

Estephania: “I learned that are colors sad and happy.” I mixed

the colors.”

Julián R. “ I learned that music instruments have

different sounds, for example strong, sad”.

Julián E: “I learned

that weather can be

represented with

colors”.

SHARING WHAT WAS LEARNED

Musical language: communicating through sounds. The kids showed what they learned

through the music class

TAKING ACTIONTo close the unit of inquiry a learning experience was organized in which the students put in practice their understanding of the traffic signs as important means of communication. Some students had the role of traffic policemen first and some others were drivers. Then, they switched roles. In that way all of them could experience the responsibility of understanding and respecting traffic signs.
