Services covered by Tuition/Fees

Covered:• Professional visits (e.g. MD,

NP, RN, RD, PhD, MSW) • 24 hr triage, on-call• Health promotion programs

Not Covered:• Prescriptions

– Most insurance cards honored

• Lab tests– Filed to insurance

• Vaccines/EKG/IV fluid– Charge to Bursar

• Referral services– X-rays, CT, MRI– Physical Therapy– Specialty Referral– Emergency Room

Confidentiality & Consent

• 18 year olds are “adults” in Virginia– Protected by privacy and confidentiality statutes– May consent to any treatment

• Parental consent needed for minors except as provided by law

For 18 year olds (and minors for certain conditions) we need written or verbal permission to speak with a parent.

Insurance Requirements

• Health insurance required by university• Adult children ≤ 26 can be covered by

parent’s employer policy after January 1, 2011.

Insurance Requirements• Adult children on parental insurance:

– Out of network benefits in college community• Specialty care, elective procedures, mental health

– Daughters may not have maternity coverage– Travel coverage abroad (e.g. med evac)– Adult children may be concerned about

confidentiality– Cost differential between employer and

college plan• Pretax payment of premiums employer plans.

How to Make an Appointment

• Students call 434-243-5150.

• Will be scheduled for brief screening phone call within 1 to 2 days.

• Based on serious of situation and level of distress, student will be scheduled for:– Same day emergency appointment – most

often for suicidal risk– Urgent Intake, 1 to 3 days – Standard Intake, usually 2-9 days

• After-hours emergency on-call clinician– Call: 972-7004

• If a student feels as though s(he) may harm him/herself or someone else, CAPS has an after-hours emergency on-call clinician available at:

Individual Psychotherapy

• Brief Treatment Model: 6 to 10 sessions

• Focus upon rapid return to necessary functioning

• Referrals to private sector for longer-term psychotherapy

Psychiatric Medication

• Approximately 15% of students in treatment at CAPS receive medication prescriptions (2011-2013)

• Black box warnings taken very seriously – close follow-up provided

Use of CAPS as Consultants

• CAPS staff available to respond to parental concerns

• Written release, signed by student, required to allow communication with parents

Parental Notification

• Parents notified of student psychiatric hospitalization due to

– Danger to self

– Danger to others

– Incapacity to protect of care for self
