PARQUET COURTSCHICKS HOTEL
DUNEDIN
8PM, $30, UTR.CO.NZ
Shit-hot, smarmy, from Texas and currently as hot as an overdone burrito, Parquet Courts are here for four shows to prove that guitar music is, basically, just music. Self-proclaimed fans of NZ’s Gordons and general badasses, Parquet Courts or Parkay Quartz are here to fuck with your subconscious and make the rest of you dance.
WESTFEST 2015ALEXANDER PARK
AUCKLAND
2PM, $178, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ
Bogans, bourbies, boots, body odour, and bloody good Tuesday times. These things are guaranteed at Auckland’s Westfest rock festival. Soundgarden and Faith No More headline, with 50 Shades of Grey-forefathers Judas Priest and a Patrick-stumping appearance from Fall Out Boy. Lamb of God will satiate the headbangers.
MOGWAITHE POWERSTATION
AUCKLAND
8PM, $75, EVENTTICKETING.CO.NZ
Mogwai have brought the noise for eight LPs of Scottish beauty-riffic talent, and to experience their show is to witness a spiral staircase (or glass case) of emotion. If you’ve slept on the band, this is the opportunity for their bottom heavy crawl to creep into your earhole. Start with 2013’s Rave Tapes then their debut.
NENEH CHERRYJAMES CABARET
WELLINGTON
8PM, $80, TICKETEK.CO.NZ
Arriving off the back of her triumphant return to music and newish album Blank Project, Neneh Cherry plays two shows. Blank Project was skeletal, no-nonsense electronic music with buckets of soul, complimenting her earlier creative peaks of Raw Like Sushi and Man. Apparently, she won’t play ‘Seven Days’, my favourite song of 1996. Essential gigging.
CONOR OBERSTTHE POWERSTATION
AUCKLAND
8PM, $79 TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ
In support of his celebrated solo album Upside Down Mountain, indie-sincere-ernest-core swinger Conor Oberst performs in Kiwiland for the first time in a decade. Expect to hear songs from across his fabled career - including Bright Eyes and Monsters of Folk – which have been hailed as veritable American masterpieces. Burning like fire, baby.

JIMMY CLIFFTHE POWERSTATION
AUCKLAND
8PM, $69, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ
If one is to experience true reggae on vinyl, one has to look no further than the The Harder They Come soundtrack – a movie that starred Jimmy Cliff and turned him into the original reggae superstar (yes, before Bob). One of the last remaining links to the original reggae movement, catch the living legend live.
GARY CLARK JR.THE POWERSTATION

AMERICAN CRIMETVNZ ONDEMAND
Put “American” in front of anything and it sounds like an awards-ready vanity reel complete with a fake baby. Luckily, American Crime is set to deliver us the dramatic goods. Starring Felicity Huffman and Timothy Hutton, the series is based around the murder of a young war vet which sends shockwaves through the stunned community.
KIDNAPPING MR. HEINEKENCINEMA RELEASE
In the 1930s, Freddie Heineken was the billionaire head of Heineken breweries. Such was the envy of the common folk of Amsterdam that two plotting crooks decided to kidnap him in broad daylight. This resulted in the largest ransom ever paid for one man. Great with a Heineken or Stella if you hate rich people.
LES GIRLSTCM, 8.30PM
Starring Gene Kelly and Mitzi Gaynor, Les Girls is told in flashback style from a courtroom. A dancing girl trio embark on a raunchy trip through Europe, and one of them wants to pen a tell-all memoir. The two others don’t agree – but it turns out none of them have the same story anyway! Saucy.
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: THE FINAL SEASONCOMEDY CENTRAL, 12.55PM
And it’s finally done. The endless story of how Danny Tanner got his mojo back and decided to tell his kids a nine season-long dad joke. This series really did birth some great characters, keeping Alison Hannigan’s pie warm, Neil Patrick Harris heterosexual and Jason Segel funny post-Sarah Marshall. Plus, Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby!
MOTIVETV3, 9.30PM
It’s been said that “every moment of Motive is a Rubik’s Cube,” and unless you’re Feliks Zemdegs, Rubik’s Cube world champ, then this is going to be mighty entertaining television. Shaking up the format of the mystery genre, the killer is revealed in the opening sequence. So it’s not a “who” but a “why”. Innnteresting.

PROJECT RUNWAY (S11)VIBE, 9.30PM
I don’t remember Project Runway season one, nor do I season ten. But alas, the hit show returns for an eleventh season – with a twist. Season 11 throws 16 eager designers into the pressurised design cooker as awkward teams. Feel the friction, taste the tears, don’t you dare touch my shiny plastic vest, you whore!
THE BREAKFAST CLUBSKY MOVIES CLASSICS, 8.30PM
I’ve never had my own locker, spent a Saturday in detention or liked Simple Minds, but still feel at home when The Breakfast Club comes on. A John Hughes classic and one of the great high school films, don’t you forget about this one. If you’ve watched Not Another Teen Movie, this is the source.
A LITTLE CHAOSCINEMA RELEASE
Kate Winslet stars in this period drama as a landscaper enlisted to construct the grand gardens at Versailles – and for whom? Just the Sun King, Louis XIV. No big. Stock up on your Earl Grey for this one. Also starring (and directed by) Alan Rickman, I reckon Snape would fit right in to the 1600s.
BATES MOTEL (S3)SOHO, 9.30PM
Focusing on the startling evolution of the psychotic Bates family, this gripping series returns for a third season filled with strife, murder and most importantly, mystery. Honing in on Norman Bates’ slowly derailing psyche, we see the consequences unravel around him and his attempt to keep things under control, especially around his manipulative mother, Norma.

I once saw an old man wearing an army helmet whilst driving. I always wanted to ask him, “why?” Did he not know of the airbag? Flashback to the tanks in ‘Nam? I’ll never know. But 100 Year Old Drivers sheds light on the elderly motorist conundrum, told by elderly motorists. A lovely, character-led documentary.

KEVIN HART: LAUGH AT MY PAINKevin Hart is the white guy’s funny black guy, so much that he stars in a new movie with Will Ferrell, the white guy’s funny white guy. He is so short that you hardly notice how funny he is, but Laugh at My Pain is a 90-minute testament to his astute hilarity. Safe word: Pineapple.

Combining style, fidelity, passion, aroma and finish, Emerson’s Brewing Company aim to provide that standard of excellence that can drop with the rise of the craft beer market. BOOK
If you’re thinking of spinning that worn-out copy of Goo or Daydream Nation, then hail this as your accompanying scroll. Hailed as a welcome change from the rote rock bio, Kim Gordon, former member of Sonic Youth and ex-wife of Thurston Moore, shares her amazing story. Around for many of rock’s major moments of the last thirty years, Gordon is a strong influence on today’s female talent. Taking us back to the identity crisis of New York in the 80’s and beyond, she ruminates on relationships, family and her time as a member one of the great guitar bands.

87TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARD WINNERS
Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel were the big winners at the 87th Annual Academy Awards.

The film fought off stiff competition from Richard Linklater’s Boyhood - which was filmed over a twelve-year period - to win Best Picture and Best Director at the prestigious event and saw Iñárritu dedicate his accolade to his fellow Mexicans in both Mexico and the US who deserve “dignity and respect”.

16 | GROOVEGUIDE.CO.NZ
The last time I talked to old skool soul singer Charles Bradley he was on a dodgy cell phone, calling from Australia, promoting his debut album and getting ready to perform International Festival of the Arts, Wellington.
His mother, one of the anchor points of his tumultuous life, had just passed on, and although he was talking it up, it was clear he was moved by the event. He’d only just released his debut album No Time For Dreaming (2011) at the ripe ‘ol age of 62.
He’d moved back to his mother’s house after confronting her about abandoning him as a baby to be raised by his grandparent. He was climbing out of poverty, having been discovered by Daptones Records and was building his reputation as a singer bigger that James Brown. That was the closest we’d ever get to the Godfather. After all he’d spent most of his life walking in James’ shoes - and jumpsuit.
Before being “discovered” Bradley had performed in a JB tribute band. And now Bradley’s back down under, performing a New Zealand Bluesfest sideshow at Auckland’s Powerstation on Thursday 26 March. He’ll be performing on the back of his second album, Victim of Love and an acclaimed documentary, Charles Bradley: Soul of America.
The film is a tale of a man that beats the odds. Canteen cook, homeless man, handyman, journeyman, street kid.. He had bouts of depression and was financially destitute at various points. He may have started late but he finally found his place. And following his recruitment to Brooklyn’s Daptone label, he’s also cuttin’ his own groove.
His new life as a headlining entertainer has brought fame and fortune. So what’s changed in the last while? How has this new career changed Charles Bradley?
“It ain’t,” he says, “I’m still Charles. There’s still love in my heart. I’m still bringin’ love to the people.”
“I’ve plenty more to say. I’ve done album two and I’m working on album three. I gotta keep myself busy, focus away from the negatives like losing my mom. Focus on the positive, let that positive energy out in the world (through my music). I need to find the music to go with my lyrics, get my expression out to the people.”
Energy is Bradley’s watchword. I can still remember him telling me about getting electrocuted on stage in Texas.
“Thousands of people were waiting for me, standing in the rain. So I said ‘Well, I’m gonna go perform for them.’ I jumped off the stage, in my white suit. Nothing but mud all over! I got back on stage, grabbed the microphone and I got me an electric shock like I never felt before!”
Has he had anymore of those crazy moments? “I had one in SXSW, Texas. There was about 10,000 people, I was on an old stage and I did the splits and a splinter went right up into my knee. I was bleedin’ but I didn’t know I was bleedin’. I thought I was sweatin’ till one of the band members said ‘Charles, You bleedin’. You wanna stop?’ I said ‘No! I’m enjoying myself. They’re enjoying themselves. We gotta keep goin’!’ And we did, even though blood’s pouring down the leg of my jumpsuit. I reached down and pulled that splinter right out. People wanted to take me to
the doctor. But I wanted to go on. I felt all the love of everyone helping me - it was all the love that kept going!”
Way back in ‘62, Bradley witnessed a life-changing performance by James Brown at Harlem’s Apollo.
“I knew then I was gonna sing,” and not just any music but Soul! It’s the music that really defines you… honest…it’s about love and tragedy. It’s real!”
It was his sister who took him along to see James at a time when he was out on the street, living rough on the streets, sleeping on trains. Faith is very important and it was tested continuously. It was then that salvation came calling.
“It changed me. I remember everything, every lick, every tune. The whole picture stuck in my mind.”
Recently Bradley played that very same theatre, with Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings.
“Boy was that a show! Hell, I was home. I said ‘the more I can let my spirit free... the more I can do here.’ It was full circle. I was giving back to the place and the people that saved me! That’s it, all I want to give back. But I also feel that I can find a little space in my heart for myself, too. So I can carry on! I look at this world and think what can I do to make this world better! That’s my gift to the world! Make the people feel better!”
Amen to that.
