When Woodruff High School faculty and staff are asked about Layne Melton and Charlie Ramey the first words that come to mind to many of them are “well rounded”, which explains why they were chosen as the April and May WHS Student of the Month.
Melton, the April Stu-dent of the Month, has displayed his leadership skills as the Student Body Vice President this year. Previously he was the freshman class Secretary. Beyond student coun-cil Melton played varsity football and varsity base-ball for four years. He is also active in other school activities as he has been a member of the Spanish Club for three years, the Science Club for a year and the Future Teach-ers of America Club for a year.
Melton’s achievements are recognized by the WHS faculty and staff as well as the student body.
“Layne has been a plea-sure to have in class the
past two years. He has great school spirit and is a true Wolverine,” said WHS science teacher Steve Ramey. “He is well liked
by his peers and is very respectful to his teachers and coaches.”
As a senior Melton plans to attend USC Up-
state next year and would like to pursue a degree in nursing. Outside of WHS Melton attends Cedar Shoals Baptist Church.
Ramey, the May Student of the Month, grabbed this honor for a second year in a row. He strikes a good balance between ac-ademics, sports and faith.
Ramey splits his day be-tween RD Anderson and his honor and advanced placement classes at WHS. He is ranked eighth in the junior class with a 4.65 GPA. With his academic credentials he has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years and last year re-ceived the underclassman Spanish Award.
Moving on to sports, Ra-mey has been a member of the WHS cross country team for five years and was previously a mem-ber of the tennis team for two.
Ramey’s faith is dis-played in a number of ways but as for organi-zations where his time is spent he has been an ac-tive member of the Fel-lowship of Christian Ath-letes for three years and belongs to the First Bap-tist Church youth group.
Ramey is truly appreci-ated by the WHS faculty and staff.
“Charlie Ramey is one of the finest young men I have ever had the joy of teaching,” said WHS Eng-lish teacher Tim Saunders. “His contagious smile, his notable manners, his un-forgettable sense of hu-mor, his willingness to learn, and his impressive work ethic make Charlie a memorable student.”
When asked about his future plans the junior said he is currently look-ing at attending Piedmont Technical College with an interest in their gun-smithing program.
In honor of being named the Student of the Month Melton and Ramey attended the local Rotary luncheon with a represen-tative from the district office, received a certifi-cate as well as being rec-ognized on the WHS news show, and will be placed on the ballot for Student of the Year which is voted on by students.

GRADUATION EDITION 2016 woodruff HigH ScHool VISIONS 4 WOODRUFF 3
Woodruff High School senior Elizabeth McCallion was chosen as the pres-tigious 2015-2016 South Carolina State Department of Education Archibald Rutledge Visual Arts win-ner. Another WHS senior, Alexis Lyda was selected as the first alternate.
The Archibald Rutledge award involves an exten-sive application process that includes a notebook process-folio documenting the thought processes, re-search, development and evolution of a single work of art and the submission of the art work itself.
McCallion’s winning mixed-media artwork was titled United Nature while Lyda’s charcoal portrait was titled Mathematical Motherhood.
For capturing this top award McCallion receives a scholarship in the amount of $3,492 that she will be using to attend Winthrop University. Had McCallion not chosen to attend a college or uni-versity in South Carolina, then the first alternate, Lyda, would have been awarded the scholarship.
The WHS faculty and staff are very proud of
McCallion’s and Lyda’s achievements.
“Lizzie and Alexis have created their art at an
exemplary level not just this year, but over three years of Advanced Place-ment Art – 2D, 3D and
Drawing. Both girls have a sharp and creative artis-tic instinct and a keen eye for design,” said WHS art
teacher Diana Olencki. “Their AP Art scores
were excellent in past years and I expect the
same this year. Both of their works were Southern States Scholastic art win-ners, with Lizzie awarded a GOLD Key and Alexis awarded the SILVER Key. I could not be more proud, not only of their work and of them as young artists, but as loving and giving people,” continued Olencki.
The Archibald Rutledge Scholarship program, named for South Caro-lina’s first poet laureate, offers twelfth-grade stu-dents who are enrolled in a public school in South Carolina the opportunity to compete for a scholar-ship in creative writing, dance, music, theatre, or visual arts. The pro-gram also encourages and recognizes academic and artistic excellence among South Carolina stu-dents. To be considered, students mail or deliver original compositions, process folios, and other required documentation in one of the five arts dis-ciplines (creative writing, dance, music, theatre, or visual arts) to the South Carolina Department of Education.

12 yeARS - nO ABSenCeSFive Woodruff Seniors Have Perfect Attendance
There are 34 students across the state of South Carolina that
are graduating from public high schools with perfect attendance for all 12 years of school. Of these 34, Woodruff High School is home to 5 of them.
Several high schools have one student achieving 12-year perfect attendance and a few high schools in the state (most much larger than WHS) have two stu-dents being recognized.
Woodruff High School is honored to have 5 of the 34
or over 14% of the students in the state that have ac-complished this feat. This is a tribute to the dedica-tion and commitment of these students and their families in obtaining this goal.
Owen Cox, Grant Ogston, Haralambos Papadonikos, Hunter Barnett, and Monica Harmon will be recognized at the May 27 graduation ceremony for their remark-able accomplishment. Con-gratulations to these out-standing students!
Rodasia Foster has signed to play basketball at Erskine College in due West. Foster received the Hustler award for Girls’ basketball and was a Winter Scholar Athlete.
Blair Bijeau has signed to run cross country at Limestone College in Gaffney. Bijeau was an All Region runner and a Fall Scholar Athlete in Cross Country.
