FOREWORDThis exhibition is a new and distinctive state-wide competitIOn for Texas
painters and sculptors. At the same time it is also a continuation of the importantTexas annual exhibits which, for the past thirteen years, have been the successfuljoint efforts of the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston, the Witte Memorial Museum(in cooperation with the San Antonio Art League), and the Dallas Museum ofFine Arts. These museums will continue to provide .p r izes from local sources andto show all or part of the exhibit. Sponsorship of the initial showing of the exhibitthis year at the Dallas Museum by the State Fair of Texas has made possible amuch larger number of prizes, the use of a jury of national importance, and hasinsured a greatly increased public interest and attendance.
This exhibition was assembled for judging by the Dallas Museum of FineArts. A total of 741 works by 44 1 Texas artists was submitted from all parts ofthe state and 126 by 110 artists (112 paintings and 14 pieces of sculpture) wereselected for showing by the distinguished jury after two full days of carefuldeliberation. These members of the jury deserve special thanks for their thoughtful efforts as well as for leaving their own duties at the beginning of a busyseason to come to "far-off" Texas and subject themselves to the dubious gloriesof jury service.
The success of this exhibit has also been aided greatly by the generous prizelist made possible by industrial agencies, individuals, and museums throughoutthe state as well as the State Fair itself with the top prize of $1,000. Finally, letmost praise go where it belongs most - to the artists who are constantly growingin artistic stature and who annually bring distinction to Texas art by theirdiligence and creative activity.
