BYNOW,itshouldbeclearthatFIANZisundergoingrealchange.Itisachangerelatedtofocus,priori>esandaserviceethos.AsFIANZentersitsfiAhdecade,themainfocusistoprovideservicestomeettheneedsofourgrowingMuslimsocietyinAotearoa/NZ.Theprioritiesareeducation,dawah,socialwelfareandthewellbeingofourdiverseMuslimpopula>on.Theserviceethosisbasedontherecogni>onthatFIANZhastoberobustinitsplanning,transparentinitsworkingsand,aboveall,mustdeliverwhatitpromises.Animportanthallmarkofareligio-serviceorganisa>onistheintegritywithwhichitapproachesitsmandatedresponsibilities.With14committeescomposedofexpertsintheirrespec>veareas,thebaselineofprofessionalismhasbeenset.DoctorsandsocialworkerssitontheHealthandWellbeingCommittee;educationalistsareontheEducationCommiRee;experiencedbusinesspersonsdealwithFIANZbusiness;andsoforth.Byfocussingonthequalifica>onsandcompetenciesneeded,thenewapproachaRractsawiderfieldofcandidatestocomplementthe

AguidetotheworkingcommiSeesofFIANZandhowtheyfitintotheFIANZstructureFIANZExcoandCouncilaimtorealisetheiraspirationsforthecommunitybyworkingwithteamsofqualified,dedicatedindividualsfromacrosstheFIANZcouncilmembers,constituentsandotheraffiliatesandtrusts.Thecommitteeswillbeledbycompetent,qualifiedindividualsand,whereverpossible,willberepresentativeoftheethnicitiesandgendersthatformtheNZMuslimcommunity.OthercommitteesmaybesuggestedbytheFIANZCouncilastheneedarises.Eachcommittee

requires3–5members.TheyareexpectedtodeliverqualitypoliciesandservicestotheMuslimsofNZ.Suitablevolunteersarewelcome.Thesecommitteeswillplantheiractivities,costthem,andoncethebudgetsarepassedhavetheauthoritytomanagetheirspending.CommitteeswillbegiventermsofreferenceandKPIsforwhatisexpectedofthem.Regardingwomen’saffairs,theIslamicWomen’sCouncilofNewZealand(IWCNZ)isresponsibleforallwomen’saffairsandalready

WORKhasbegunonthedevelopmentoftheFIANZpropertyat463-471PorchesterRoadinthesouthAucklandsuburbofRandwickPark.AucklandCouncilgrantedbuildingpermitsforamosque(doublingasahall)andsixone-bedroomaccommoda>onunits.Beforestar>ngconstruc>on,substan>alearthworksneededtobecarriedout.Thisisalmostcompleteandthenextstageistostarttheaccommoda>onunits.Ini>allythesewillbeusedfortemporaryclassroomsforaschoolthatisplannedforthesite.Intendedasarealassettothecommunity,theprojectwillrequiremanymillionsofdollarstocomplete.Itwillbeundertakenonastage-by-stagebasisfromfundsthatFIANZcanraise.Toachievethat,wewill

needcommunityinputintermsofdona>onsandvoluntarylabour.Twooldshedshavebeenrefurbishedandmadeintoamussallah(prayerroom)andyouthcentre.Themussallahisnowopenforregularprayers,whichMuslimslivinginthevicinityofthecentreareencouragedtoaRend.Men,womenandyoungstersareallencouragedtocomeandusethefacili>esprovidedforthem.FIANZ’sAucklandofficeherewilleventuallybeusedforwidercommunityserviceforMuslimslivingintheAucklandarea.

TWOSCIENTISTSinourcommunityhavebeenmakingnews–DrMustafaFarouk,FIANZpresident,andDrAnwarGhani,chairmanofthePublicRela>onsCommiRee,bothbasedinHamilton.Meatcookedathightemperatures–barbecued,forexample–createschemicalscalledheterocyclicamines(HCAs)thatarelinkedtocancer.Nowthereishopefora
