FASHION DESIGN
Getting Started
AIMY CORBEIL
AIMY CORBEIL, DESIGNER FOR "FOR THE LOVE OF FABRICS" HAS BEEN SEWING FOR THE MAJORITY OF HER LIFE. WHEN
SHE WAS 8, SHE WAS HELPING HER MOTHER AND BY 10 SHE WAS ENROLLED IN HER FIRST SEWING COURSE WHERE SHE MADE A PAIR OF SHORTS AND A SCRUNCHY. FROM
THERE, SHE WENT ON TO MAKING JUST ABOUT ANYTHING. IT WASN'T UNTIL SHE BECAME A PERFORMING DANCER AT THE AGE OF 19, WHEN SHE WANTED TO START DESIGNING THE AGE OF 19, WHEN SHE WANTED TO START DESIGNING HER COSTUMES BECAUSE SHE COULD NOT AFFORD PRE-‐MADE COSTUMES. NOW, SHE LOVES DESIGNING GOWNS, WHETHER THEY ARE FOR GRADUATIONS OR WEDDINGS. WITH A PASSION FOR BRIGHT AND BOLD COLORS, SHE
WANTS HER CLOTHING TO BE MADE WELL AND FLATTER A WOMAN'S SHAPE. SHE DOESN'T DESIGN FOR THE TALL
AND SKINNY, SHE DESIGNS FOR ALL WOMEN.
Y You’re excited, you’re tired, you’re nervous, you hurt. These are just some of the things you will be feeling when starting out as a designer and you’ve completed your first collection. So now what to do? Get it photographed.Get it photographed. A properly done photograph will make a big difference in capturing people’s at-tention with the design. It also allows you to commu-nicate the idea behind the design a lot more. It can take a beautiful gown from just that, to high-end fashion with the right image.
It is imperative that you find the right photographer for your idea/designs. How do you do that? Well, in a perfect world, we would all be able to afford to just open a leading fashion magazine and select one of the high-profile photographers in the industry. Unfor-tunately for most of us designers, this is not the case. Instead, log on to Fashion-Faces.com, Face-book, Model-Mayhem, Google..etc. Search for a photographer in your general area. You will most likely come up with many. Do not choose the pho-tographer with the first pretty picture you come across. Go to as many of their websites or fan pages as possible and look through all of the pic-tures. Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few that have styles you like. Find out rates, some may be out of your budget (which is something you should be aware of when looking into this). Check referenc-es, try to find someone who’s used them before to make sure they are professional. Also, meet with them in person, communicate your idea behind your designs. My personal belief is a photographer who can start coming up with ideas for images that I love just be seeing or hearing about the colors and de-signs used for the collection is the one I will use.
Next is finding a model, or perhaps multiple models, as well as a hairstylist and make-up artist. This can be done in a very similar way to finding a photographer. The extra aspect you have to look out for when it comes to models is their height and size, and beware, there are many freelance models that are not accurate with their measurements. I suggest meeting with them in person and taking your own meeting with them in person and taking your own measurements, or seeking a modeling agency for your model needs.
It should go without saying that it is very important to discuss compensation with everyone involved, so there are so surprises on the day of.

ON THE BIG DAYof your show during Fashion Week, you will need to bring the following:
-designs-shoes-accessories (including jewelry)-safety pins, double-sided tape, scissors, thread and -safety pins, double-sided tape, scissors, thread and needle-water and light snacks for your team-camera-payment for those involved-look book, pricing and other documentation of your designs-outfit that you want to be seen in on the runway-outfit that you want to be seen in on the runway
It takes a long time to get all your models ready for the show. Be prepared for a long day. To give you an idea of what timing is like:
My last show at Western Canada Fashion Week, One hairstylist, one make-up artist and myself took almost five hours to prepare 10 girls. That includes make-up, hair, one quick run-through on the runway and dressing them. That did not include any time for photos.
-use only one model at a photo shoot and have them change outfits as opposed to paying multiple models -photo shoots and many fashion shows are meant -photo shoots and many fashion shows are meant to sell the design and not the sample, so cut corners when possible without compromising the design*:-use cable ties (zip-ties) instead of boning in a gown that needs structure -use cheaper quality linings (if the lining is not seen)-find decent quality fabrics at some local thrift stores-discuss possible-discuss possible TFP (time for print) with photogra phers and models. Some will do them, but make sure you know their rules with TFP as it’s different with everyone you work with
Often new make-up artists and hairstylists will agree to TFP to buildup their portfolios, kind of like your self.

-look for smaller fashion shows (such as charity shows) that will let you participate without an entry fee.
* DO NO* DO NOT DO THIS WITH DESIGNS FOR CLIENTS. These tips have been passed down to me by the wonderful Trisha Pasnak from Edmonton, Alberta.

You will need an awesome pair of sunglasses to carry you through summer and go with any outfit sooo ,choose wisely. Warby Parker will lend you 5 pairs of specs before you actually commit. What? Yes! True Story.. Pick your 5, check your mailbox, try em on, pick your pair, and ship em out. Done and done! www.warbyparker.com
Maximize your closet with a Maxi dress Trust this gem will get you through almost any occasion this summer depending on how you dress it up or down. This dress will allow you to add hats, belts, big bags, heels or flats, and chunky monkey jewelry, fun! I like to pull mine up at knee level in the middle on super hot and humid Austin days and tie it in a knot. Try it! ( The key to this is buying a lux maxi is investing in a cotton jersey blend for full on breathing and stretching capabilities.)
A Summer Statement Peice (or pieces) for the accessories freaks like myself such as a chunky bangles or large presentation piece necklaces or dangle earrings. Some of my favorite statement piece artists at the moment are Hey Murphy, House of Harlow, Unearthen, and Ax + Apple.

Three last things to remember for looking and feeling hottLive, Love, Dance... Like nobody’s watching.
things to make you look hot and stay coolBy Danni Dee
2. Cool Girls Bangles
3. WEAR your STRIPES?! All aboard. This season is about mixing prints and
STRIPES is one of them. You can never go wrong
with combining stripes with a bright color and some
very hip pumps.
4. Eye Candy What is a summer without elite essentials? Sunglasses. This season they are “catty,”
reflective and stamped with abstract
print. Beach here we come!
Beach fashion California-style is all about bright colors such as Coral, Aqua, and Sun-Kissed shades. A cropped knit top is the sun to my sunset. It is the perfect outfit for both day and night.
You will be amazed on how a few accessories can
add to an outfit. A few bangles and a mixture of long
and short splash of color necklaces will make a
BIG difference. Shhhh...I think I may love to
OVER ACCESSORIZE!

A: It’s a program to guide you to learn to love yourself, discover
your purpose, and boost your self-esteem. It helps you to iden-
tify your gifts and create new healthy relationships. Typically
you will receive a one minute professional DVD of your work
on the runway and in class. You will begin your portfolio with
5 pictures by a professional photographer. You’ll receive The
Clarissa International Model University Certi cate of Comple-
tion and A complete personalized for you “swatch” color analytion and A complete personalized for you “swatch” color analy-
sis booklet. And of course everyone who goes through the pro-
gram is welcome to use my inner circle of connections.
Q: In your own words, what makes you a quali ed fashionista?
A: I have worked with every major fashion house from Versace
to Armani. These are designers that book only 25 girls per
show—the worlds best. Out of all the models worldwide, they
chose me. I was booked for every one of their shows. I was one
of the top 25 runway girls in world.
You name it I was there. I was one of
the very rst models to gap all differ-
ent types of modeling. Modeling used
to be all segmented: runway, edito-
rial, or catalogue model. I didn’t care
if they were segmented, I said, “Clar-
issa can do them all” and I did. My
whole world has been based on noth-
ing but beauty and fashion.
Q: What is your personal style in
three or less words?
A: Classic, elegant, and Easy.
Q: Do you have any advice on a fa-
vorite fabric choice for the readers?
A: I love jersey because it stretches,
ows and is feminine. If I had to say
favorite fabric it is de nitiely jersey
for a girl.
