ENGLISH COMP WEEK 5
jorge gomez
When analyzing…
Be “first-class noticers” Read between the lines Consider possible uses of “irony” Consider CONNOTATIONS and SYMBOLS
Ex. Denotation of “computer” : a machine that calculates Connotation of “computer”: technology, the digital world,
machines, disappearance of the natural world, AND SO ON
Look at the “inward significance” of artifacts Look at how the PARTS/PIECES of a visual artifact
contribute to the piece as a WHOLE, for better or worse Example: How the soldier (the part) in the mural
strengthens or weakens the mural (the whole) in terms of the mural’s PURPOSE
Visual Analysis
Consider the organization used for the rhetorical analysis
Remember to ‘attach’ of copy of the visual (if it’s an ad or a painting and not a video) to your paper as an ‘appendix.’
Remember: BE SPECIFIC Example of the kind of “specificity” that works: A sport – football – American football – NFL –
NFL AFC – NFL AFC South – Houston Texans – NFL fantasy football league featuring Houston Texans
players “Deathstar operators”
Visual Analysis
Audience Be sure to point out the audiences for the artifact Consider: DIFFERENT audiences might have
DIFFERENT REACTIONS Remember that there’s usually more than one
(go over the presentation on “audience”) The “intended” audience
This MAY or MAY NOT include you The “universal” audience
This includes you This could be perhaps an online audience or a world-wide
audience
Visual Analysis
Logos: How is it constructed? How is it organized (or disorganized)? What is the MEDIUM used? (paint, computer animation,
watercolors, photographic film, stone, clay, wood, AND SO ON) Is it LOGICAL? Does it make sense?
How do the pieces contribute to the logic of an artifact? Pathos:
What range of emotions are evoked and HOW are they evoked? Are they effectively evoked?
Art “jargon”: color, scale, perspective, background, foreground Ethos:
1. Examine the creator’s reputation, authority, and/or expertise. Who is the creator? Does the creator represent his or herself or a corporation?
A. Consider possibility of “conflicts of interest” 1. Ex. A petroleum ad PAID for by a petroleum company
