Don’t rush it. Body-builders don’t train in a day – neither does a child.

And most important ofall, HAVE FUN!

Read the book WITH your child. You read the “regular” text, and he/she reads the big, red words, sort of like reading the different parts in a play.

Help your child sound out the words as needed.

Read the book several times. This helps develop the eye muscles and left-to-right reading patterns.

“Water is wet,” said

with a sigh. sam“I like myself better bwhen I dry.” am b

9

But had asamsecret: couldn’t samswim, so he sat in the bsand and never went in. b

10

bthan water...

Ed the Elephant band his daughter. b

12

“Ella,” said Ed, “say

hello to .”sam

13

“Where?” she squealed.

“Oh, where is my bsam?”

14

Then she sat on sam– by mistake of course – bshe must not have seen bhis pink-purple shorts. b

15

“Dad, where did samgo?” Ella said with a whine. b“ always runs off – samwell, maybe next time.”b

16

“I here!” said amsam. “Get off!

I stuck!” am b

17

Lucky for , samElla stood up. b

18

“Achooo!” Ed sneezed bthrough his snozzly snout. b

bHe did not know he should

cover his mouth. bSnozzly – silly way of saying “snozzle,” which is a silly word for “nose” – especially a big nose.

19

And got wet, samwhich he did not like. b“Can I please have a btowel so that I can wipe...” b

20

But his words were lost bas Ella screamed, b“Dad, oh, Dad, you bbought ice cream!” b

21

“ ,” said Ella, “you sammust have a bite...” and bthe spoon, by accident, bsmacked his eye. b

22

sam wiggled away

and covered his face. bHow was he going to bget out of this place? b

23

But before he could brun, Ella picked him up. b“ ,” she said, “have sama drink from my cup.” b

24

Then she put him bdown, on top of a ball. b“Whoa!” said samas he tried not to fall. b

25

“Look, Dad, isn’t b cute?”sam

26

But Ed was busy bremoving his boots. b

27

Bam! The boots

landed on ,samknocking him over band into the sand. b

28

sam grabbed a towel

and slipped underneath, bhoping that Ella and Ed b

bwouldn’t see.

29

“Dad, where is

? He’s gone samagain. I thought,” said Ella, b“that he was my friend.” b

30

“No way!” thought bsam, under the

towel. “I have to go, band I have to go now.” b

31

sam started

to crawl... he was bcrawling away... b

32

Until more belephants got bin his way. b

33

Edith and Ethel and bbEgbert too – all of the

belephants from the zoo

34

were having a picnic bdown by the sea, where bthe sun always shines band the air is free. b

35

“Oh, no!” said . samThere was nowhere bto go. b

36

b

Endless elephants ball in a row. b

37

But over his shoulder bwas the sea. No belephants there... belephant-free. b

38

sam took off

the towel and his bglasses too. b

39

He stepped in

the water – what belse could he do? b

40

“Oh, my!” said .sam“This water is wet – b

I ready to swim?” am b

41

His heart said, b“Yes.”b

42

“Then goodbye bto elephants!” b

dove in. sam b

43

And that is when b started sam

to swim. b

44

45

He swam, and he bswum – he was bswimming away... bAnd now...b

If you go to the bocean, you go to the bsea, will be samswimming, oh, yes, siree. b
