DISABILITY RESEARCH TO PRACTICE

CODE BOOK

Purpose:

1. To provide guidelines for coders to interpret ‘RESEARCHESE’ language

2. Assure reliability of coding decisions

3. Provide transparency of process

DISABILITY RESEARCH TO PRACTICE

CODE BOOK

Process:

1. Develop the Coding Form

2. Define all the qualitative or descriptive terms of the form

DISABILITY RESEARCH TO PRACTICE

CODE BOOK

1.ASD Classification

Autism: The term ‘autism’ or ‘autistic’ must be used. This could include ‘autistic like’ or ‘autism characteristics’

Asperger: This term must be used

PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder): This term

must be used

2. Severity: The terms MILD, MODERATE, or SEVERE must be used.

 – Any two terms connected by the word ‘to’

(e.g., mild TO severe) constitutes a new category

– Mixed: Any two terms connected by a dash (-) (e.g., mild-moderate)
