In contemporary performances, readings, dance and video, Solos and Monologues explores the richness of emerging individual voices from the Arab world. The focus lies on the artistic means that might be able to register, document and translate the ways in which artists, engage with the social and political shifts in the Arab world that turn on issues of citizen-ship and civil society.

The discursive stage seeks to underscore the vitality of the processes that link civic imagination and struggle. As the col-lapse of many regimes in the Arab world exposed urgent civic and political demands the current events of change, transfor-mation and renewal move way beyond the frontier of tech-nocratical „reform“. Where popular disenchantment can not be confi ned within a specifi c contemporary practice, new horizons of the future need to be and are already constructed and imagined.

After a year at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinémato-graphiques in Paris, Omar Amiralay began to question whether fi lm was really his vocation, but when the May 1968 revolt erupted, he joined the protestors and began to fi lm. His fate was sealed: he dropped his studies and began to make documentary fi lms.
I visited Beirut, Damascus, Amman, Ramallah, Tunis, Cairo and came across one quality in all of these places: an incred-ibly vital civic conversation.” Okwui Enwezor
