Professional development

must move from

something that we do to

educators to a culture of

continuous learning

cycles and problem

solving that leads to

better opportunities for

their students.

Contextual Teaching

Contextual teaching recognizes the fact that

learning with understanding involves five

processes known collectively as the REACT

strategies (CORD, 1999)

– Relating: Learning in the context of life experience.

– Experiencing: Learning in the context of exploration,

discovery, and invention. Recognition of the need to know

encourages the brain to function at higher cognitive levels.

– Applying: Applying concepts and information in useful

contexts.

– Cooperating: Learning in the context of sharing, responding,

and communicating with other learners.

– Transferring: Learning in the context of existing knowledge,

using and building upon prior learning and experience.

What approaches are effective?

A research-based study names six factors

with great potential for achieving results.

Activity

Think of one PD opportunity you offer to

your teachers as NSS

Analyze according to the characteritics

presented before

Grade it from 1 to 10 in terms of

effectiveness

professional development

opportunities in eTwinning

What we have:

• NSS

• Ambassadors

• eTwinning Projects

• PDW and other Seminars

• FCLab courses

• Groups

• Self teaching material

• Learning Events

• Ambassadors Course

• Moderators Course

• Online Seminars

Online training

Online Professional Development

Peer Learning

Face to face training

Online events

Massive growth of online events

Audience

Less cost

Online events

Busy schedules

No travel

Big range of choice of events and presenters

Speed of information

Internet connection

Face-to-Face

Benefits

Concentration

More engagement

Meet people (not

only task focused)

React to the

audience (honest &

direct feedback)

Benefits

Personal connection/empathy

Social side

Non verbal Communication / Body language

Benefits

Creative contributions

Effectiveness (get things done)

Community (smiley face, punctuation)

Builds trust

Face-to-Face vs Online

Both essential

Activity 2

Go back to the PD opportunity you

analyzed earlier

Share with one colleague

Grade each other activities from 1 to 10

What could you do to improve it? What

could your colleague do to improve its

own activity?

Activity 3

Think about one of your indicators/main

goal as NSS at any level (european,

national, regional or local)

Design a PD opportunity

Go back to your colleagues, share,

discuss and revise it.
