1) Cultivating & HarvestingCotton is grown anywherewith long, hot dry summerswith plenty of sunshine andlow humidity.T he cotton bolls areharvested by stripper harvesters and spindle
pickers, that remove theentire boll from the plant.

3) SpinningT he spinning machines take the roving, thins it andtwists it, creating yarn which it winds onto a bobbin.
Several slivers are drawn and twisted together toform the final yarn. T wisting is made by twomechanical actions. First, a drawing framecondenses slivers into a thinner strand (slubbing) andwinds it on a bobbin. A spinning frame then reducesroving to required size of single yarn (fine spinning).A suitable amount of twist is introduced according tothe intended use of the fibre.

T here are a few more finishing processes such aswrinkle resistance finishing, flame retardantfinishing, soil repellency finishes etc. which can also
be carried out to enhance the properties of the fabricfurther.

4) WeavingMachines called loomsweave cotton yarns intofabrics. Looms interlace the
length-wise yarns (warp)and the crosswise yarns(wefts). The woven fabric, called gray goods, is sentto a finishing plant where
the fabric is treated withvarious type of chemicalfinishes and undergoes avariety of physicalproperty enhancement
processes.

Important DevelopementsGenetically M odified Cotton(G M CO TT ON)-
A gene conferring resistance to glyphosate (an
active ingredient in herbicides) was transformedinto cotton for the first time in 1987.Bt cotton is a pest- (rather than pesticide-)resistant variety. It contains a foreign geneobtained from bacillus thuringiensisa , which
protects the plants from boll worm
