Washing machines have become one of the essential
gadgets in modern day life. It has proved to be a great help
with washing clothes in today's era where time and effort
have become very expensive.
Ever since the Washing machine was developed and
marketed by the manufacturers, several innovative
changes have taken place in the form, content and
performance of this consumer friendly product.
They are categorized into various groups according to the
functionality as follows:
By Loading:
Front Loading
Top loading
By Function:
Semi Automatic
Fully Automatic
The top loading design or V-axis clothes washer, places the
clothes in a vertically-mounted perforated basket that is contained
within a water-retaining tub, with a propeller-like agitator in
centre of the bottom of the basket. Clothes are loaded through
the top of the machine, which is covered with a hinged door.
The front loading design or H-axis clothes washer, mounts the
inner basket and outer tub horizontally, and loading is through a
door at the front of the machine. The door often contains a
window.
A semi-automatic washing machine contains two tubs, one
for washing and the other for drying. This is more of an
entry level washing machine.
Semi automatic machines require manual intervention in
the controls.
A fully automatic, on the other hand, can be either front or
top loading and only requires loading the dirty laundry and
unload them after the wash.
Pros Cons
Does not need a continuous water
connection.
Consumes less water as compared to
a fully automatic washing machine.
Washing cycle requires less time.
It can be moved easily from one
place to another.
Manual intervention is required from
washing to drying process.
You might get tiny shocks while
moving clothes from washing to
drying if the wiring in the house is
not properly earthed.
All the controls are manual.
Requires more space.
Pros Cons
The automatic process is very
convenient for those who are
busy both at home and
workplace.
Energy and water efficient
Very little manual intervention
They take more time to
complete the wash
process than a semi automatic
one.
Expensive

formulated detergents not yet
widely available.
