Part of
Revalorizing Small Millets in the Rainfed Regions of South Asia
Preface
We live in an age that is witnessing an unprecedented agrarian crisis
compounded by catastrophic climate change and rampant malnutrition. The
alarming surge in search of pat solutions for this has led to one of our traditional
crops, millets. Small millets under the flagship of All India Coordinated Small
Millets Improvement Project (AICSMIP) refer to a group of crops viz., Finger,
Foxtail, Little, Kodo, Proso, and Barnyard millet that are vital to the economy
due to their suitability to the agro-ecology and socio-economic conditions.
Millets are truly miracle grains as they seldom attract any biotic stress, be it
disease or pest. They can grow on the most marginalized soils - without irrigation
and with very little or sometimes no external inputs due to their very high
resilience nature. On account of their richness in dietary fiber along with protein,
minerals and essential amino acids; a global recognition as veritable storehouses
of health and nutrition has been marked in recent years. Besides, millets are
also the pivot around which a vibrant agro-biodiversity survives, wherever it is
allowed to survive.
The major growing states are Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra and
Gujarat. The annual planting area under small millets is around 2.1 million
hectares of which Finger millet alone accounts for about 62% area and 76%
production. The production has not come down proportionately in spite of
decline in area of cultivation of Finger millet (1.929 million tons) on the area of
1.176 million ha. In contrast both area and production of other small millets have
steeply declined with only marginal improvement in productivity (452 kg / ha.).
The crop improvement activities in small millets have been going on in the past
three decades in the AICSMIP. Due to concerted efforts made by the 14 centres
covering 10 states affiliated to AICSMIP, significant number of cultivars with
i
desirable agronomic traits reached the farming community. To document these
varieties, the Project Coordinating Unit, AICSMIP, ICAR, GKVK, Bangalore has
made an effort to assemble the information on released varieties across the
country. This publication "Compendium of Varieties in Small Millets" is the
outcome of such an attempt.
It has been endeavored in this book to compile the available information on
released varieties of small millets in a common format. The information that
was available in the "Hand book of small millets varieties" and variety release
proposals maintained at AICSMIP, Bangalore besides, the other publications of
the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture,
Government of India has been used in compiling this book.
I gratefully acknowledge the financial support from DHAN Foundation (Project
under Revalorizing Small Millets in rainfed regions of South Asia, IDRC, Canada)
to publish this book. My thanks and appreciations also go to my colleagues at
the PC Unit viz., Dr. M. Krishnappa, Dr. Jayarame Gowda, Dr. P. Ravishankar,
Dr. A. Nagaraja, Mr. E.G. Ashok, Dr. P.S. Jagadish and Mr. R. Munirajappa. Special
thanks to Dr. A. Seetharam, former Project Coordinator (Small Millets) for his
valuable suggestions.
I would like to express my gratitude towards the efforts of Mr. R.G. Sathish,
Dr. V. Sujay, Dr. Channayya Hiremath, Mr. Anil Patil, Dr. Jayalakhmi and
Dr. A.B. Narayana Reddy
Finally, I take this opportunity to express my thanks to all the Heads, AICRP
(SM) Centres them who have willingly contributed for the successful publication. (M.V.C. GOWDA)
