Private Primary School with Nursery for children and pupils with autism

• The school was established in 2007• A year later, in 2008, the school opened a special

educational counselling centre and an afterschool club• In year 2011 the school moved into new premises• At the moment there are 57 children and pupils with

autism in the school• 14 children in nursery department (from 3 to 6 years old)• 43 pupils in primary school (from 6 to 18)• 287 clients in special educational counselling centre (from

18 months to unlimited)

Classes

- Children are educated according the School educational program, which is based on the State educational program for children with autism.

- Children are educated individually according individual educational programme (IEP)

- IEP are made by special needs teachers for a period of 3 months.

We have a special ICT room for IT lessons with various programmes for educational purposes or just for fun.

Each computer has access to the Internet.

It is used for whole class lessons or individual teaching.

Reading pen is a very effective tool to teach pre-literacy skills:

• eye-hand coordination• left-right orientation of text• kinetic, visual and auditory channels of learnig are

used

It is also used for children who are taught reading by Global Reading technique.

• coordination of movements• social interactions in the class among

classmates• ability to imitate (dance and sport games)• behaviour in the class (x-box as motivation)

We use iPad for:• communication (PECS application in iPad)• for educational purposes: matching, sorting,

puzzle games, sound matching, sequencing, etc. • for behaviour: iPad is a very popular motivation,

so we use it as a reward after work• free time activity

Methods we use:

Special educational and counselling centre

• Special educational counselling centre provides differential-diagnostic, counselling and therapeutic services for clients with autism and their families. It was established in 2008 as a part of Private Primary School with Nursery for children with autism. Its services are available for clients of the whole region of East Slovakia. At the moment there are 240 clients in the centre and their number is growing every day.
