S E A S O N O V E R V I E W2010-2011 season

The 2010–11 season is Chelsea Football Club’s 96th competitive season, 19th consecutive season in the Premier League, and 105th year in existence as a football club. They went into the Premier League as the defending champions, but failed to retain it.

The season was managed by their 2009–10 Double-winning manager Carlo Ancelotti, but his association with the clubwould be broken off, having been sacked at the end of this season. Chelsea started off the season with an amazing five-consecutive-wins run in the Premier League, which was eventually halted by Man City when Carlos Tevez scored to lead hisside into a 1–0 triumph over the defending champions. Chelsea were leading the Premier League table for almost half a season, before Manchester United overtook them when they went through their worst run in the club’s history during the winter saga. Altogether in the Premier League, they won 21 games, drew 8 and lost 9. They conceded the least amount of goals compared to all the other clubs, sharing this with the club which first beat them, Manchester City.

In January 2011, on the last day of the transfer window, Chelsea bought Fernando Torres for a club-record-breaking and British-record-breaking fee of £50 million from Liverpool. They also bought defender David Luiz from Benfica for a fee reportedly to be £21 million. However, Torres would not repay the club in form of goals for another 903 minutes until he scored against West Ham, which marked the start of Chelsea’s final chance of staging the Premier League’s best comeback. The comeback was destroyed by a 2-1 away loss to United, in which Javier Hernández and Nemanja Vidić scored.

In the Champions League, Chelsea were grouped with Marseilles, Spartak Moscow, and MSK Zilina. They qualified at the top of their group with 15 points, moving on to the round of 16. They were paired with Copenhagen, and Chelsea won the first leg 2-0 in Copenhagen. The second leg finished 0-0, progressing Chelsea to the quarter-finals 2-0 on aggregate. Chelsea played Manchester United in the quarter-finals, losing 3-2 on aggregate.

In the 3rd round of the FA cup, chelsea won 7-0 against Ipswich town, before playing Ever-ton and tying 1-1. In the replay, they drew again 1-1, and losing 3-4 on penalties.

S E A S O N O V E R V I E W2011-2012 season

The 2011/12 season is Chelsea Football Club’s 97th competitive season in the Premier league, amd 106th year in existence as a football club. The first half of the season was managed by newly appointed Andres Villas-Boas, who had signed a 3 year contract. On 30th July, AVB won his first trophy with Chelsea (the 2011 Barclays Asia trophy). He won all of the pre-season fixtures, with Chelsea only conceding 1 goal in 6 games.

He had his managerial debut with a 0-0 draw at Stoke City. He then won 2-1 against West-Brom on the 20th August. Chelsea

carried on winning back-to-back until their defeat to Manchester United. In November, Chelsea got eliminated from the League

Cup quarter finals. They then won 3-0 to advance to the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions league. On the 12th of December, Chelsea won against Machester City 2-1. Pressure began to build

on AVB when they dropped out of the top 4 in the premier league. In the Round of 16 (CL) AVB left Lampard, Cole and Essien out of the starting line-up against Napoli. Then on the 4th of March, Villas-Boas was relieved of managerial ditues at Chelsea. Roberto

Di Matteo was appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

He started his Chelsea career in good form, winning against Birmingham City in the fifth round of the FA cup. He also won against Stoke in the Premier League, and against Napoli in the last 16 round in the Champions league (winning the second leg 4-1, with a 5-4 aggregate score). He had the for-

mula for success. He then went on to win against Tottenham 5-1 in the FA cup semi-final, and against Benfica is the UEFA Champions League quarter finals. They were pitted against the defending champions FC Barce-lone in the semi finals of the competition, winning the first leg 1-0 at home with a goal from Didier Drogba

before half time. In the second leg at Camp Nou, Barcelona went 2-0 up before half time, before Ramires chipped the ball over Valdez into the net, making the score 2-1 at the half time whistle. In the second half, Chelsea played an ultra-defensive formation to counter Barcelonas legendary tika-taka passing style. They

played a 6-3 formation, with 4 central midfielders in the second leg. Fernando Torres then dribbled the ball up the pitch with only one defender, skipping past the goalkeeper, and slotting the ball into the net, giving them

a 3-2 aggregate score. As a result, they will be playing Bayern Munich on the 19th of May in the UEFA Cham-pions League final. Thanks to their 5-1 win over Tottenham, they played Liverpool in the FA Cup final on the 5th of May. They won 2-1, effectively winning their first major cup. They also finished the Premier League in 6th place. Chelsea won the Champions league final against Bayern Munich 1-1. The game went to extra time, where Robben had a penalty, which was saved by Cech. In penalties, Drogba scored the winning penalties. He

then announced that he was leaving Chelsea in the summer since his contract expired.
