Prostatecanceristhefourthmostcommoncanceroverallandthesecondmostcommoncancerinmen.In2012,worldwide,thereareestimatedtohavebeen1.1millionmendiagnosedwithprostatecancer(accountingfor15%ofallincidentcancercasesinmen),withalmost70%ofthecases(759000)occurringinmoredevelopedregions.Prostatecancerincidencevariesbyafactorofmorethan25worldwide;theratesarehighestinAustralia/NewZealandandNorthAmerica(with2012age-standardizedincidenceratesof111.6and97.2casesper100000men,respectively)andinwesternandnorthernEurope,becausethepracticeofprostate-specificantigen(PSA)testingandsubsequentbiopsyhasbecomewidespreadinthoseregions.Incidenceratesarealsorelativelyhighincertainlessdevelopedregions,suchastheCaribbean(with79.8casesper100000menin2012),southernAfrica(61.8cases),andSouthAmerica(60.1cases),butremainlowinAsianpopulations,withestimated2012ratesof10.5and4.5casesper100000men,respectively,ineasternandsouth-centralAsia.

Withanestimated307000deathsin2012,prostatecanceristhefifthleadingcauseofdeathfromcancerinmen(accountingfor6.6%ofallcancerdeathsinmen).BecausePSAtestinghasamuchgreatereffectonincidencethanonmortality,thereislessworldwidevariationinmortality(with2012ratesvaryingbyafactorof10:fromapproximately3to30deathsper100000men)thaninincidence.Theestimatednumberof2012deathsduetoprostatecancerishigherinlessdevelopedthaninmoredevelopedregions(165000and142000,respectively).MortalityratesaregenerallyhighinpredominantlyBlackpopulations(with2012age-standardizedmortalityratesof29and19–24deathsper100000menintheCaribbeanandsub-SaharanAfrica,respectively),verylowinAsia(e.g.2.9deathsper100000menin2012insouth-centralAsia),andintermediateintheAmericasandOceania.
