FACTS Cables are more fragile than

they look Small wires inside can break if stepped on or twisted* Treat with care

Cables & Connectors

Coaxial Cable

Coaxial cable conducts an electrical signal using an inner conductor (usually a solid copper) It is surrounded by an insulating layer and all enclosed by a metallic shield.

The cable is protected by an outer insulating jacket Voltage is applied to the center conductor to carry electrical signals.

Advantages: *Electric and magnetic fields are confined to the dielectric with little leakage outside the shield.

*Electric and magnetic fields outside the unable to cause interference to signals inside the cable

S-Video Connector

S-Video Connector

*A video signal transmission in which the luminance signal and the chrominance signal are transmitted separately to achieve superior picture clarity.

Luminance: Carries brightness information (black and white)Chrominance: Carries color information

RCA Connectors

Used for connecting devices to send audio and video signals.

Yellow for composite video signal Red for right audio channel White for left audio channel

RCA Connectors

XLR Connector

XLR Connector

A three pronged plug used to connect a microphone to the recording device. (includes male and female ends)

BNC Connector

BNC Connector

Carries a video signal A type of connector commonly used

in television production. The female and male versions lock together securely with a simple 1/4 turn.

Bayonet connector

High Definition Multi-Media Interface

HDMI Cable

A compact audio/video interface for transferring data and audio data from an HDMI-compliant device (the source device) to a compatible computer monitor, video projector, digital television, or digital audio device.

HDMI is a digital replacement for existing analog video standards.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface)

This cable supports data transfer speeds at upwards of 400 Mbps.A 6-pin connector is used when making connections between PCs and a 4-pin connector is used to connect to peripheral devices, such as camcorders.

Firewire Cable

Needs 3 separate cables/wires, RGB, one for each color, red, green and blue to carry the video signal.

Component Video Signal

Has a combined video signal of red, green, and blue in one cable/connector.

Composite Video Signal

(Luminance and Chrominance) A term used to describe the separation of video signal component. The measure of brightness (luminance) and color (chrominance).

Y/C

This device displays information only about the chrominance (coloring) portion of the video signal. It is a reliable instrument to judge the accuracy of color and for setting up equipment to accurately reproduce colors.

Vectorscope

This device graphically displays and monitors the brightness or luminance level of a video signal regardless of its format (ie: NTSC or PAL)

Waveform Monitor

Device or software that produces static or animated text. It can be directly loaded onto the TV screen.
