20    JULY  2014   16TH  SUNDAY  ORDINARY  TIME

To be a Christ-centred family that loves and serves one another with joy and humility

LIFE IS PRECIOUS News  of  the  Malaysia  Airlines  crash  in  Ukraine  has  been  greeted  with  not  just  horror  but  disbelief  in  Malaysia.  A  second  air  disaster  in  five  months.  A>er  MH  370,  it’s  MH  17.  Just  incredulous.

Malaysia's  badminton  world  champion,  Lee  Chong  Wei,  expressed  the  bewilderment  so  many  felt:  "I  don't  think  we  are  ready  to  accept  this  so  soon  a>er  the  MH  370  tragedy.“

As  Singaporeans,  we  can’t  help  but  feel  for  our  brothers  and  sisters  across  the  causeway.  It  could  just  as  well  have  happened  to  our  airlines.  Reports  say  that  an  Air  India  and  a  Singapore  Airlines  plane  were  just  25km  away  when  the  tragedy  happened.

Whatever  the  reasons  for  the  disaster,  innocent  lives  have  been  lost  in  both  tragedies.  Those  who  died  had  no  say  in  how  their  lives  should  end.  They  were  definitely  not  prepared  for  it.

It  just  brings  to  mind  a  chilling  reality  of  just  how  precious  life  is.  Life  is  fragile  and  no  one  knows  when  death  will  occur.  The  uncertainty  of  life  tells  us  that  we  should  never  take  anything  for  granted.  Therefore,  we  need  to  take  our  relaTonship  with  God  and  with  each  other  more  seriously.

This  means  we  are  called  to  live  in  the  present,  the  now.  Not  dwell  with  regrets  of  the  past  or  worries  of  the  future.  Every  now  is  a  gi>  from  God.  What  are  we  doing  with  His  Gi>?

EVANGELII GAUDIUM The  Joy  of  the  Gospel

- Pope Francis -

#28   The  parish  is  the  presence  of  the  Church  in  a  given  territory,  an  environment  for  hearing  God’s  word,  for  growth  in  the  ChrisTan  life,  for  dialogue,  proclamaTon,  charitable  outreach,  worship  and  celebraTon.  In  all  its  acTviTes  the  parish  encourages  and  trains  its  members  to  be  evangelizers.  It  is  a  community  of  communiTes,  a  sanctuary  where  the  thirsty  come  to  drink  in  the  midst  of  their  journey,  and  a  centre  of  constant  missionary  outreach.  We  must  admit,  though,  that  the  call  to  review  and  renew  our  parishes  has  not  yet  sufficed  to  bring  them  nearer  to  people,  to  make  them  environments  of  living  communion  and  parTcipaTon,  and  to  make  them  completely  mission-‐oriented.

 WEDDING  NOTICE

NCC Reflection

That Christ was full of compassion and charity is an undisputed statement. When we call ourselves disciples of Christ or Christians, what has to be at the heart of our faith is to imitate as much of this as possible in the living out of our religion. While correct doctrine guides the understanding of correct moral and socially just issues, religion cannot just stop there. If it does, it easily makes one very (falsely) self satisfied and think that one’s spiritual quest is over. It is not. At the heart of religion has to be the ability to see in every human being the connection that one has with the other. When this is missing, it becomes far too easy to add to the millions who have been blamed for sullying religion to give cause to the statement that it has “done much more harm than good to the human race”. Perhaps this begs the question – “why is it so much of a challenge to live in this way”? I do not want to be overly simplistic in offering a simple answer, but I do sincerely believe that the answer lies in the fact that we are too protective of our very selves. It becomes difficult to see in another a brother or sister when we put ourselves in a judgmental position where we often think that our views, our ways of doing things, and our opinions are of a higher quality than the other. It becomes a challenge to act with mercy and charity when the other person I am dealing with is seen more as competition rather than companion. It also becomes far more difficult to become generous with my assets and belongings when I view the other and his needs as something that is going to make my own possessions diminished in any way.
