Architect Lewis Bowman is best known for the grand homes he built in Bronxville in the 1920s and '30s. This1926 Mediterranean is one of 53 he designed in the village.

Architect Charles Lewis Bowman got his start in Mount Vernon, but he is best known for the grand homes hebuilt in Bronxville in the 1920s and '30s. They were notable for their highquality and durable constructionmaterials, fine design and the way he often sited them so beautifully on difficult sites with tall woods andenormous slabs of rock.

The styles varied widely: Cotswold cottages, stately Georgians, Mediterraneans, centerhall Colonials, and"stockbroker Tudors." In all, he designed 53 homes in this village where he lived and raised his family.

A particularly grand and stylish Mediterranean, at 279 Pondfield Road, is now on the market for $5.95 million. The 5,630squarefoot house was built in 1926 for the naturalist and biggame hunter William J. Morden, who contributed exotic animals to the AmericanNatural History Museum in New York.
