Quirky´s Adventures
• Quirky is a little hydrogen atom and lives on the surface of the sun.
• He is to become a helium atom.
• But something goes wrong, and Quirky gets emitted.
• Quirky flies across the universe and meets exciting “people”.
• One day he is absorbed by Mr. Chlorophyll who lives on the earth.
• Quirky takes hold of one of the outer electrons of Mr. Chlorophyll.
• Together Quirky and the electron escape on an escalator full of proteins.
• The electron and Quirky finally arrive at a place which is called Photosystem.
• Their they are converted into chemical energy (ATP).

3. The attachment of CO2 to an organic molecule is called ___________________, and
in the first part of the Calvin cycle _________________, a five-carbon molecule, combines with CO2. This reaction is driven by the activity of a protein in the chloroplast (an enzyme) which is called ______________________. The resulting product of this reaction - a six carbon intermediate - breaks down immediately to form PGA, that is converted to ___________________ by using ATP from the ________________________ . The final products of these reactions are _____________________ and_________________ .

Without it modern science would perish: The discovery of M ichail S. Cvet in 1906
In the year 1906 Michail S. Cvet who was born in Italy and later moved to Russia succeeded in separating plant pigments with the help of a new technique called chromatography (Greek: khroma = colour; and Graphia = writing) which literally means “colour-writing”. Today chromatography is used to separate a mixture of substances into its specific components (molecules). Cvet used a green extract from plant leaves he obtained by grinding cut leaves in an organic solvent (like acetone) with a mortar and a pestle. With a pipette (Pipette) he then placed little drops of the pigment solution on a piece of special paper. Afterwards the paper was put into a glass jar containing a small amount of another solvent mixture (Petrolether, Propanol and very little water). As the solvent slowly moved up the paper the pigments also started to move but at different rates because each class of pigments had a different size, solubility (Löslichkeit), molecular mass and hydrogen bonding (Wasserstoffbrückenbindung) with the paper. In the following investigation you will separate plant pigments in the same way as Cvet did. The only difference is that you will use thin layers of silicagel (Kieselgel) instead of paper. Therefore this method is called thin-layer-chromatography (Dünnschichtchromatographie) and not paper chromatography. However, the underlying principles are exactly the same: Material: Wheat leaves, a pair of scissors, mortar (Mörser), pestle (Pistill), sand, beaker, glass jars, pipettes, thin-
layer plates (DC-Platte) with silicagel. Chemicals: Acetone (Propanon), chromatography solvent (Laufmittel) containing: Petrolether, Propanol and very
little water (100:10:0.25ml). Experimental Procedure: a+b) Cut a handful of leaves with a pair of scissors
and grind them by using a mortar and a pestle (add a little bit of sand if you like) and 10ml of acetone.
c) Fill the green pigment solution carefully into a
beaker and take up a small amount of it with a pipette.
d) Two centimetres from the bottom of the thin-
layer plate you carefully place little drops of the pigment solution onto the thin-layer plate.
e) Now you put the thin-layer plates into a glass
jar containing the solvent (take care that the drops containing the pigments are at the bottom but do not reach the solvent).
Vielen Dank !
Was ist bilingualer Unterricht ?
• Ziel: Sprachkompetenz verbessern
Chancen & Herausforderungen
• Englisch als Lingua Franca
• Mehr Hör- und Sprechzeiten
• Die Verwendung der Sprache als Mittel zum Zweck
• Hoher Transferwert des jeweiligen Vokabulars
