• Today—types of weather

• Clouds are made of liquid water– The water is in very small drops– Some of these collide and combine to form

larger drops– The cloud becomes thicker and grayer. – Soon the drops are too heavy for the wind to

keep them in the air.

– They fall to the ground as precipitation.

raindrops• When air temperature is warm; water

vapor forms liquid precipitation, or raindrops.

Solid precipitation• When the air temperature is below the

freezing point of water, water vapor forms solid precipitation.– Sleet– Hail– Snow

Sleet• When raindrops fall through a layer of very

cold air near the ground, they freeze, changing into tiny bits of ice called SLEET.

Hail• Hail can form in severe thunderstorm

clouds when raindrops in the cloud collide with bits of ice. The drops freeze, forming hailstones.

• Wind will then push the hailstones back up into the cloud and the hailstones grow larger.

• Softball size

Snow• Snow forms when air temperature is close

or below freezing.• It is so cold it turns from water vapor to

solid crystal.

Measuring Precipitation• Unit of depth (inches)

• Rain gauge: is a container that has a scale marked on it in millimeters or inches.
