THE BATTALIONTuesday, December 15, 1959 PAGE 3
feiiow tor FaradeSomehow it just doesn’t seem like a Christmas parade without snow. But even the old, old timers can’t remember it having snowed in the Rio Grande Valley. With temperature in the 80’s there was only one thing to do—rig it. Here we see Santa’s helper, Shirley Tobola of Harlingen, trying out the artificial snow that was dropped from a plane flying low over the parade route. (AP Wirephoto)
Awards Luncheon To Top Regional Meet of JETS
COLLEGE(Continued from Page 1)
ior mechancal engineering major from Dallas; Ralph Eugene Petersen, senior agricultural engineering major from Danevang; Sam Houston Ridgway, 6th year veterinary medicine major from Pearsall;
Dennis Michael Ryan, senior mechanical engineering major from Dallas; Joseph John Sekerka, senior business administration major from San Antonio; Robert Lovell Wilson, Jr., 6th year veterinary medicine major from College Station.
One of the main features of the Junior Engineering Technical Society’s southwest regional leadership conference here Saturday will be an awards luncheon honoring clubs and individuals.
The society, better known as JETS, is a pattern for high school extracurricula clubs to stimulate interest among junior and senior high school youths in engineering and science careers.
Purpose of the conference is to bring together at all levels those interested in the promotion and success of the organization. It is being held in co-operation with JETS, Inc., of East Lansing, Mich.
Among those individuals to be recognized at the luncheon will be Frank: Oppenheimer of New York City, president' of the Gramercy Guild Group and the man who has made available the Gramercy JETS Scholarship.
The $250 annual scholarship in Texas has for the past three years gone to Donald Patton of College Station, a junior mechanical engineering student at A&M. Patton was a JETS club member when he attended A&M Consolidated High School.
The scholarship can go to the same student for four years if he maintains a satisfactory academic standing.
Texas awards will go to the Connally High School of Waco for having the outstanding JETS club. C. T. Hudson is the club sponsor.
Mrs. Marie Mosman of Muenster High School at Muenster will be honored as the state’s outstanding club sponsor.
For Louisiana, the outstanding JETS club award will go to Is- trouma High School at Baton Rouge. And Miss Gertrude Creag- han of the Istrouma school and William Lignos of Baton Rouge will receive honors as top faculty advisors.
The outstanding company award goes to the Esso Standard Oil Co. of Baton Rouge.
Speaker at the luncheon will be
Dr. John C. Calhoun, vice chancellor for engineering at A&M and a member of the board of directors of JETS, Inc.
J. G. McGuire, assistant to the dean of engineering here and chairman of the conference committee, said registration for the parley is Dec. 18. The actual program begins at 9 a.m. the following day with a welcome address by Fred Benson, dean of engineering at A&M.
Next are talks on national organization and objectives by Richard T. Fallon, executive director of JETS, Inc., and Dr. John D. Ryder, JETS president and dean of engineering at Michigan State University.
The Senior class of A&M Consolidated High School will present Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s three-act comedy, “The Man Who Came to Dinner” Thursday at the high school auditorium.
The comedy is centered around the tumult caused by Sheridan Whiteside, having dined at the home of the Stanleys’ slips on their doorstep, breaking his hip. During his six weeks of convalescing in the Stanley home, ;Whiteside utterly destroys do-; mestic tranquility. Strange gifts from his friends further complicate things; for Mrs. Stanley is forced to harbor penguins in her library, an octopus in her cellar, and 10,000 cockroaches in her kitchen.
The play, under the direction of Mrs. Ermine Worrell, will be presented with the following cast:
Ann Elkins as Mrs. Stanley, Sharon Manning as Miss Preen, Frank Dui’an as Richard Stanley, Rebecca McNiel as June Stanley, Jimmy Holland as John, Lynda Chalk as Sarah, Nancy Minter as Mrs. Dexter, Janis Card as Mrs.
JETS organization and objectives on the state level will be described by McGuire; A. J. Druce, associate professor of electrical engineering at A&M; Jesse P. Morgan, assistant dean of engineering, New Mexico State University, and W. C. Gaddy, state chairman of the vocational guidance committee of the Louisiana Engineering Society.
Organization and objectives on the local level will be the subject of Waddell P. Williams of Marlin, Texas Highway Department engineer; Wesley C. Collier of Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, and Gordon M’cDugl, president of JETS at Connally High School of Waco.
McCutcheon, David Howard as Mr. Stanley.
Also Marilyn McElroy as Maggie Cutler, Bill Gray as Dr. Bradley, John Calhoun as Sheridan Whiteside, Anita Hamner as Harriet Stanley, Bruce Thompson as Bert Jefferson, Mark Linksay as Professor Metz, Dorothy Berry as Lorraine Sheldon, Ben Jackson as Sandy, Mike Gay as Beverly Carlton, Fred Brison as Wescott, David Dulaney as Banjo, Dee Smith as the convict, Joe Guidry and Mike Denison as the express- men, Rosemary Thompson, Virginia McAfee and Margaret Patterson as the choir girls, and Joe Guidry, and Larry Godfrey as the deputies.
